In 2006 Showtime debuted Dexter, a crime drama based off a series of books written by Jeff Lindsay. Many of you may be assuming that Dexter can’t possibly bring anything new to the table, but this show’s twist is much darker than the crime dramas you may be used to. Set in Miami, the show revolves around the title character, Dexter Morgan’s personal and professional lives. Orphaned at an early age, Dexter was raised by Harry Morgan, a detective for the Miami Metro Police Department. After discovering Dexter’s sociopath personality, Harry teaches Dexter to take his urges out on people who deserve it, rather than killing just for the thrill. Even into his adult life and after Harry passes, Dexter adheres strictly to Harry’s code, which proves to be very convenient for him as he works for Miami Metro as a blood spatter analyst.
So far Dexter has knocked out three seasons and is already signed up for two more, a trend that most shows these days can’t even begin to imitate. Not only is each season is filled to the brim with shocking, never even imagined twists in the ongoing investigations, but the character development is phenomenal. As a viewer you can relate to every character in some way or another (especially Dexter), which is what a great show should do.
MichaelĀ C. Hall (Six Feet Under) plays Dexter Morgan, the boy next door with the dark secret. Other noteworthy characters are Jennifer Carpenter’s (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) Debra Morgan, Dexter’s foster sister who is also part of the Miami police force; James Remar, as Harry Morgan; Rita Bennett, Dexter’s girlfriend, played by Julie Benz (Jawbreaker); Lauren Velez as Lt. Maria Laguerta; David Zayas, as Sgt. Angel Batista; C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka, another forensics analyst.
The cast of Dexter is second to none, and this is one of many reasons the show’s popularity soars. The writers don’t just introduce you to the characters, but they are constantly giving the viewers a peek into the secretive lives of each personality. You’d never expect lieutenants and ADA’s to struggle with morality issues, but Dexter reminds the audience that everyone is human and everyone harbors some kind of secret.
The writers and film crew do a bang up job at showing the viewers a day in the life of a sociopath playing the role of a loyal boyfriend, loving brother, best friend and honest co-worker. In all my life I never thought I would be siding with a serial killer, but after just one episode I promise you will be, too. All it takes is the first 50 minutes of Dexter and this morbid yet alluring show will be at the top of all of your torrent searches DVD purchases.
