Free Music Streaming Sites do exist! Just try Grooveshark!

Dun-dun, dun-dun, dun-dun...Up until about a month ago, to listen to music I was interested in I’d either 1.) buy it legally from Best Buy, FYE, Target, etc. 2.) persuade Josh to bit torrent it for me on his Mac 3.) YouTube it and watch some goofy homemade video to go along with it or 4.) give it a 30 second listen in iTunes. However, thanks to Ryan Ross of Panic at the Disco and his frequent music tweets, I have been made aware of Grooveshark and its list of amazing music playing abilities.

Is there a catch? Do I have to buy a “premium account” to access all of Grooveshark’s music?

Nope. Just make a standard user account, and unless the owners of Grooveshark decide to start charging (unlikely, seeing as how they just discontinued charging for their music), have at it. The three undergrads in charge of Grooveshark would like their service to be thought of as an “online jukebox, [comparable to sites like] Last.FM and Pandora radio.”

Can you really find any song?

No, but just about! So far I have searched hundreds of songs and there have only been a few instances where I have not been able to find a certain song or artist.

Can you make playlists?

However many you want, really! I most recently made the playlist “90′s Music” and it got me through my history and psychology finals last week. Cooler still is the fact that you can “follow” other Grooveshark users and favorite them and their playlists. I have not spread the word of Grooveshark to many yet, but consider this your recommendation from me to you. My user name is Ennellekay.

I need musical advice and can’t talk to Nicole directly. Can Grooveshark help me out?!

No worries! Much like iTune’s Genius technology or Pandora’s thumbs up/down feature, Grooveshark has “autoplay.” Autoplay will recommended songs for you and then let you rate them with smileys or frowns. Finally, once you do like a song or songs Autoplay dishes out for you, you can save those to yet another playlist. Go nuts!

Jeez, sounds PERFECT!

Honestly, it is! The only exception (if you consider this a downfall, I suppose) is that Grooveshark does not punish users for unlicensed content. To date Grooveshark and GS related parties have never condemned anyone for this crime, but lets hope they keep it that way! If not, this free music streaming service won’t be free for long.

All said and done, I would more than recommend Grooveshark for your musical needs. Whether it be satisfying that craving to hear that song that’s been stuck in your head all day, getting that piano part from “Boston” (Augustana) down orĀ  to hear “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden just one more time, you can surely rely on Grooveshark to get the job done.
