Previously I’d talked a little about how to keep your notes synchronized with Evernote and also how to keep files updated across multiple computers using Dropbox. While I might do more parts in this series later on, today I’m just going to write a bit about Simpilify Media, and why if you float around to multiple computers throughout your day how it’s great at keeping your mountain of MP3s following you wherever you go. Not to mention with a lightweight installation and full support for the iPod Touch and iPhone, Simplify Media makes a strong addition to our series on how to keep your digital life in sync.
Installation
If you head over to http://www.simplifymedia.com you can choose to download the small application for either Mac, Windows, or Linux. When the installer runs, you’ll be prompted to create a username and password. At this point you’ll be prompted to enter your email address, display name, and finally type a descriptive name for the computer you’re using. Finally you’ll be presented with the following screen to choose what songs you wish to share from this computer.
After you’re all set up and ready to go you can pull up the media list to see a status update of all of the computers on which you’ve installed Simplify Media.
Repeat this process for each of the computers you want to share music to and you’ll find that streaming your libraries over the internet in either iTunes, Winamp, or Windows Media Player is snappy and very quickly searchable.
iPhone/iPod Touch Support
In addition to being able to stream to your PCs while you’re on the go, there are also 2 Simplify Media apps available from the AppStore. The original Simplify Media is $3.99 while Simplify Media 2 is $5.99 and adds functionality like search, favorites, playlist management, and seek. While the mobile versions aren’t free like they’re desktop counterparts, they’re certainly worth the price of admission, especially if you’re low on space with an 8 or 16GB iPhone.
In the end, Simplify Media is a great way to keep all of your music physically in one place while allowing you to listen to it anywhere you can snag an internet connection.
