Yesterday Joshua and I released the results of the World of Warcraft competition. If for some reason your computer wasn’t playing our podcast (there really isn’t any other reason you wouldn’t have listened to it), you would have found out I was the victor. It was a very close race the entire way through, and I do give many kudos to Joshua for catching up three levels and even surpassing me most of the time. You may be wondering how in the world this could have happened, considering Joshua’s dedication, diligence, and use of robots. I’m here to list a few details why the race was so close and why I ultimately dinged before him.
1.) Weekend visitors.
As of Saturday the 21st we were both level 79, Joshua about 30% closer to level 80 than me. My family visited last weekend and our friend Jon stopped by for lunch, so we didn’t get as much time to play World of Warcraft as we normally would have. While I was loving and tending to my precious grandparents and cousin, Joshua was busy ignoring them by playing World of Warcraft. He even made them stain our back deck while he leveled to rid the house of all distractions. Also, my teenage cousin decided to give WoW a try after watching us, and like a good older role model I showed him the how-to in Tirisfal Glades. Joshua could have spread his WoW knowledge along with me but he was too busy trying to blow past me to help my family in his time of need. By the time I was done he was a good 50% into 79 while I was still barely 79. Your hands may be in fists after reading about this callous behavior, but no worries, reader. His actions were justified in the end. It was at this point I knew something drastic had to be done.
2.) No guts, no glory.
Like we also discussed in the podcast, my family, Joshua and I went to the Movie Tavern Saturday night to check out Inglourious Basterds, and since we didn’t see the movie until 10:30PM we didn’t get out until late. By the time Joshua finally passed out in the basement it was around 3:30AM and I was feeling groggy and unmotivated. But the rewarding taste of victory pushed me to get myself up and make my way to the computer room. I ended up playing until about 6:30AM, and once the sun started to shine through the blinds I realized it was probably time to go to sleep. We woke up Sunday morning around 11AM and because he was still ignoring my relatives he made his way up to the computer and sat down, his character about halfway to level 80. What he didn’t know though is that my character was about 10% away from hitting 80. I did about five more quests and then the magical moment happened. At this point because we’re in the same guild and were in the same group I figured he’d notice the “Ennellekay has just earned the achievement [Level 80]!”, but he didn’t, so I had to say it outloud. He took the news very well, although I think he’s secretly planning something scandalous.
3.) He cheated.
Well… so did I. But I will say Joshua started the gold-stealing battle. I arrive to my laptop one day to find my gold missing. I’m so poor I can’t even pay for a flight anywhere. Of course I had to wait for him to finish doing whatever he was doing to come give me my money back too. He did this a few more times before I decided enough was enough and I was going to start stealing from him too. This time though, I was going to go the extra mile and make him resurrect and pay for repairs. So while we were in Howling Fjord and he was missing from the room I sent his character into a mad dash off the nearest cliff. His rebuttal was flying my character high above Storm Peaks and dismounting so I’d have to watch in horror as my character went plummeting toward the ground.
4.) We both worked WoW into time we didn’t know we had.
Between instances with Jon, Chris and Josh’s dad until the wee small hours of the morning, early mornings before work, while my toddler I nanny was sleeping, while eating and just about every moment between, we were both trying to out-level each other by playing when we knew the other couldn’t. I would play while he’s at work and he would play while I was at work, and so this vicious cycle continued. We convinced visitors to play and some days we neglected eating until we realized we hadn’t eaten. Now that the race is finally (thankfully) over, we can spend more time doing normal things. But this was an extremely fun ride and I think we both have bragging rights considering we both leveled to 80 in about two months. Be prepared to see more done on the site now, like a new theme, new music, new logo, more original posts, and of course, more contests.
P.S. Our friend Dkzelthor asked what I won for winning the contest. Well… nothing except for the title of hitting 80 first, but after much thought Joshua, here’s the prize I demand. It doesn’t have to be today, I’ll give you until the weekend.
