Introducing the Playstation 3 Slim

Not as sleek and shiny, but the money you'll be saving is worth it.You’ve heard the rumors for so long, but on Tuesday, August 18th, Sony officially announced a new model for the PlayStation 3… the PS3 Slim. You can read the full story here, but here’s what I’ve gathered…

Pros:

- The Slim has most of the same capabilities as the original PlayStation 3′s, but is smaller, lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive for only $299.99. As of right now the 80GB original PS3 is $299.99, so it will be interesting to see if they drop the price on the older systems!

- Sony has made the PS3 more energy efficient. Good for the environment and good for you (see: less fan noise)

- You still get your standard two USB ports and built- in WiFi.

-You can replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty, and they have moved the position of the hard drive to the front of the system so it’s easier to do so.

- The firmware is getting a 3.00 upgrade.

Cons:

- I don’t know about other gamers, but I love how shiny the PS3 is (I believe it’s called ‘piano black’), especially with the silver “PLAYSTATION 3″ lining the side of the system. The new PS3 Slim isn’t as sharp, as you can see in the picture.

- Although the PS3 is kind of bulky, the width problem could be fixed by simply standing it upright. Sadly, the new PS3 slim doesn’t stand upright by itself. In fact, you have to buy a stand for $24.99 just to get the thing to take up less space. Fail on Sony’s part.

- Still no backwards compatibility. Come on, Sony! PlayStation 2 games are your pride and glory, make better use of them!

- You can no longer install other operating systems, like Linux onto your PS3 Slim. Sony is trying to stop this from the original PS3′s as well.

If the pros outweigh the cons for you and you’re in North America or Europe, the PlayStation 3 Slim will be available for you to pick up on September 1st, 2009.
