As a 1988 baby and a female, I was too young and probably of the wrong sex to enjoy the G.I. Joe cartoon as a child (my earliest memories of TV are of Eureka’s Castle). I didn’t play with G.I. Joe toys and I never played imaginary G.I. Joe/soldiers with friends on the playground. In fact, my only knowledge of G.I. Joe anything comes from YouTube vids like this and this. This left me wondering how interested I would actually be in the new G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra movie, but as usual I surprised myself by liking most of it. Read my first movie review here!

Review: District 9
I’ll admit I was skeptical about District 9. It’s Neill Blomkamp’s first outing as a director and while there was a clever viral marketing campaign established for the film, I had my doubts. After finally seeing a trailer, I was a little more intrigued as the action contained appeared to be supported by an interesting premise- an inherent desire to sympathize with the aliens portrayed rather than solely wanting to eradicate them on general premise. Having now seen the finished product, I can say without hesitation that I came away more than impressed. Read on for the full review.
Mac Noob: Deleting Files
Alright, so this is truly a quick ‘n dirty post, but again, hopefully some of you that are new to OS X will find this useful if you’re transitioning from Windows. When I first started using a Mac again I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to delete a file using the del key on my keyboard. At first I thought it might be a problem with the keyboard, but then after a quick search I found the answer to my problem- you have to hit del in conjunction with the command key. I found this to be just slightly unintuitive but it’s not a huge deal once you get used to it. Later this week I’ll do a post with a listing of commonly used mac shortcuts as well to help out anybody struggling with how to navigate the OS faster.
What Makes a Game Valuable?
I was talking to my Dad this morning and an interesting conversation came up regarding what defines the value of the games we hold near and dear to our hearts. After a little bit of rambling and a loose comparison to old Marvel trading cards that encompassed stats of each hero on the back of the card, I realized it would probably make a good post. Now, I’m not talking necessarily about what makes a game a good game (I’ll save that for a later post) because there are some atrociously awful games that are still revered by many gamers. However, below I’ll go over 5 ways games can hold their value.
The “Avatar” Craze Begins
For the first time since 1997, James Cameron will be stepping out of the shadows to release his new sure-to-be blockbuster, Avatar. Avatar’s release was first announced at the San Diego Comic-Con last month, where he set fans into a frenzy by showing 25 minutes of footage. Details about the movie are still vague, but the official trailer is set to come out this Friday the 21st. As of right now, the plot sounds fairly typical for sci-fi: humans are visiting another planet and attempt to make contact with the natives there, called “the Na’vi” (as a Zelda fan I thought this was cute). However, it is James Cameron, so the result will be far from typical.
Also in true Cameron fashion, along with releasing the trailer on Friday, he has announced the 21st of August to also be “Avatar Day”. This nationwide event will only be found in select cities, and unfortunately for our Columbus viewers, it’s already sold out. Sixteen minutes of scenes and trailers will be shown at theaters across the country at 6:00pm. Seems a bit much for what is basically an extended trailer, but the crowd’s reaction at Comic-Con was apparently so great that the movie demanded a grand opening. So what do you think: will this film compete with The Matrix and Star Trek as another award-winning sci-fi movie? Can it surpass Titanic? We’ll all find out on December 18.
Congratulations, Keith and Christy!
The lack of updates and podcast comes from yet another busy, filled-to-the-brim weekend! This one is a legitimate excuse, though.
Our friends Keith and Christy tied the knot yesterday (Saturday the 15th) and are now making all of us green with envy as they enjoy themselves in Mexico. Joshua managed the audio and slideshow during the wedding, Josh’s dad, Rusty videotaped everything that went down and I played the piano for the ceremony. It was an absolutely gorgeous wedding packed with tons of touches that really made it unique to our newlyweds. So between rehearsal/dinner, the wedding, the reception, and lunch with Josh’s rents we didn’t have much time online this weekend (too busy enjoying ourselves!). More geek-like updates will be posted this week however, including a podcast. Stay tuned and classy!
Stop Reading This, Go See District 9
So Nicole and I went to see District 9 last night and I can’t even begin to tell you how devoid your life is of meaning until you see this film. Alright, that might be pushing it, but it doesn’t change the fact that District 9 breathes some much needed life into the sci-fi genre and is an outstanding first effort from director Neill Blomkamp. I’ll be doing a full review at some point in the coming week, but suffice it to say District 9 makes Alien look like Battlefield Earth. Alrighty, again probably an unfair exaggeration, but it’s damned good and while I had suspicious it might be the sleeper hit of the summer, it’s flat out been my favorite movie thus far. So, as the title succinctly said, get up, or at the very least go order your tickets online, and go check out District 9 asap.
Double Feature Next Friday
In lieu of Nicole’s horrendous posting about Twilight, I figured I’d post something a little more my style in the way of movies. Our friend, Jake invited us to go to the Ohio Theater next Friday to see a late showing of Evil Dead 2, which, I’m not entirely sure Nicole has seen. That’s criminal I know, but it’s an absolute classic and I can’t wait to see it in theaters for the first time.
However, while I’m certainly pumped to see me some Bruce Campbell, Inglorious Basterds also comes out next Friday. So, with any luck I’ll be able to talk everybody into seeing that earlier in the evening followed by Evil Dead 2. I can’t honestly say I’m more excited about one over the other, but it should be an awesome movie night. How many of you are looking forward to Tarentino’s latest effort? Also, whoever can tell me their favorite Bruce Campbell moment wins all of my internets for the week!
5 Frowned Upon Breaches of Online Gaming Etiquette
1. Ganking

Rogues are by nature some of the sneakiest, most hated fiends in all of World of Warcraft. When they’re not standing atop the mailbox in Ironforge smugly hawking lock picking services for a questionable 3 gold a piece, they spend they’re nights doing what anybody with their particular skill set would- stabbing you in the back. Likely attracted by the rogue’s notoriously low profile demeanor, gankers gravitate to this class primarily because they’re damned good at being a nuisance. Time and again they’ll stealth around at level 80 in lowbie leveling stretches for the sheer enjoyment of a one-shot backstab kill. For that matter they could probably just as soon blind your goofy ass and beat you bloody with their bare hands. While this practice is obviously hated by lowbies, nearly as hated is our next item which is basically a variation on the gank…
New Moon Official Trailer Released
I know what you’re thinking, and you can keep your lips sealed!! But for all of us cultured folk, you’ll be excited to know the official full length New Moon trailer is out and can be viewed here. The second installment of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series will be in theaters on November 20th of this year (just in time for my birthday!).
