Microsoft’s Retail Store Looks…Familiar

Microsoft RetailSo Microsoft’s retail stores launched recently and I can’t quite place my finger on it, but it almost feels like I’ve already been to one somehow.  It’s eerie really, like deja vu almost.  I mean, I don’t know how that’d be possible considering I’ve never, ever stepped foot in a store with expansive areas of glass facilitating natural light, museum-ish displays for products, minimal design and a…bar of some sort where they must keep the genius employees to answer complicated questions about hardware and software.  Oh well, maybe it’ll come to me later.  In the meantime if you’d like to see more head over to pcmag to check out a slideshow of more images from the new retail store.

How To: Build a Dell Mini10v Hackintosh

HackintoshWhile rumors persist that Apple will be releasing a tablet-based Mac to join the netbook craze, Engadget has a great article on how to turn a Dell Mini10v into a Snow Leopard netbook.  This used to be a far more convoluted process, but Engadget’s guide seems to have made it much, much easier.  I’m not entirely sure of all the legalities involved and if your Mini 10v goes belly-up during the process I doubt that Dell would be very sympathetic to your loading an unauthorized OS onto their hardware, but if you’re feeling brave and want a small, sleak package to haul around your OS X goodness on, this guide would be a great place to start.

“If an RPG and FPS had a baby…”

Borderlands logo…then this would be said baby. I’m sure you have heard at least someone talk about Borderlands at some point by now, and chances are that person was praising it. Originally mentioned in the August 2007 Game Informer magazine, this RPS (role-playing shooter) debuted last Tuesday across North America. The description on the cover was “Diablo meets Mad Max in this groundbreaking four player co-operative first person shooter.” It has since changed quite a bit, like the fact that it is also deemed a RPG. Here I list five of my observations/likes/dislikes about 2K Game’s newest superstar game.

Creating Steady Content For Your Website

NeverlandHaving kept this site loaded with at least some form of update nearly daily, I decided it would be good to post a bit about things you can do to keep your site alive with fresh content.  Writing or producing for the web should be fun.  I’m not saying you’ll never have your off days or times when other priorities in your life might keep you from the keyboard, quite the contrary. There are plenty of caveats to producing something new.  You might find yourself stuck in a rut with bloggers-block or have too many other demands on your time to focus on producing new content.  Whatever your current vice is, here are 5 tips I put together to help you keep your head up and keep creating.

Hands On: The Magic Mouse Sucks

Not MagicYeah, that’s slightly more negative than my usual hook, but I just can’t help myself.  While I didn’t mind the Mighty Mouse so much, enjoying the click and the scroll-ball on top, this new attempt to re-vitalize the mouse misses the mark on concepts that ought to be a given considering we’ve used a mouse for a few decades now.  Namely, Apple completely overlooks ergonomics, usability, and customization.  The low-profile aesthetic may look nice, but it feels awful after using it for a while.  While the touch gestures seemed neat on paper, two-finger swiping left and right for forward and back in browsers is painful as you contort your hand into a freakish little gremlin claw to perform the action.  Finally, with a full-touch surface, so much more could’ve been done in the settings to allow user-defined actions in different apps.  It could be that a forthcoming patch rectifies some of this, but as it stands the shiny Apple design doesn’t do much to offset the steep price and questionable feature set.  If you absolutely need a nice wireless mouse and can get over not having the shiny Apple logo resting beneath your palm, check out the Logitech Performance Mouse MX.  It’s still pretty pricey, but more configurable and it doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve contracted carapal tunnel after five minutes of use.

Oh Hai, LoLCat Bible Heres

Hai!So Nicole found this little nugget the other day and because I’m hopelessly addicted to internet culture I had to publish something about it.  For those of you who just aren’t satisfied with a online lolcat-translated version of the Bible, you’ll be happy to know that soon enough Amazon will begin offering an actual book version of it starting January 1st that you can put on the shelf next to your Halo Game Fuel and prominently displayed Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.  While I can’t say whether we’ll actually be picking it up, I figured if we’re here to keep you in touch with geek culture we couldn’t rightly leave it out.  Enjoy and have a happy in your heart!

Lots of New Apple Goodness

Designer iMacSo the reason for the Apple store suspiciously going down the other day has finally been revealed- a whole slew of updates to Macintosh hardware and some snazzy new products!  Granted, analysts had predicted for a while that there would be some new products forthcoming this October, but it’s nice to see them finally come out.  Because Apple has a more in-depth examination of the new goodies, I’ll spare you the exhaustive details and instead rely on my good friend, bulleted-list to give you a quick ‘n dirty run-down of some of the more notable announcements:

  • Introduction of the Magic Mouse, the successor to the not-so-Mighty Mouse featuring mouse gestures
  • Brand-spanking new iMacs in 21.5″ and a whopping 27″ aimed at designers (now with SD card slots no less)
  • Revamped Mac Minis
  • New polycarbonate shell base model Macbook, though still at a $999.00 starting price
