All five of the new campaigns for the heavily anticipated Left 4 Dead 2 game have been announced, and this time there will be a story arc. Set in the Southern United States, players will get to survive the zombie apocalypse in five new, (mostly) original settings.
1.) “Swamp Fever”, set in an overgrown bayou (creepy enough without zombies),
2.) “The Parish”, which takes place near a church (again, very creepy, especially assuming there will be a graveyard),
3.) “Dark Carnival”, where survivors must pass through a half-operating theme park,
and the newest two to be announced
4.) “Dead Center”, which takes place in a mall (it had to be done) and
5.) “Hard Rain”, which is set in an oil refinery.
Also coming to Left 4 Dead 2 is “realism mode”, which is evidently meant for the hardcore-iest of the hardcore gamers. We’re not exactly sure what Valve has in mind with this yet, but some speculation has been made. Should head shots be the only shots that count? One take down and you’re out? Along with realism mode there will be a “Scavenge” mode gamers will be able to play on multiplayer, where the object is to collect all of the levels’ gas cans to fuel the generator and win the round. The players start out with 120 seconds and for each gas can they collect, they receive an additional 20 seconds. I’m not a big fan of feeling rushed (I stayed far, far away from this game when I was a kid), but I think I could probably brave it at least once to review it for Geekspodcast.
Another change Valve has decided to make was to scratch health packs and pain pills and replace them with ammo packs and adrenaline, where your character will go into beserker-mode and start meleeing any zombies that dare cross his or her path. I’m not sure how I feel about not being able to rely on health packs throughout the campaign… we’ll see how this turns out.
The last very big addition players are looking forward to are the new zombies. The newest special infected is the “spitter”, who has the ability to spew venom from a range (sounds like a skinny boomer), and the second are what Valve calls the “uncommon-common”. These zombies will be unique to each level. For example, in “Swamp Fever” you will face zombies called “mud men” who are crazy fast and crawl on the ground. Ew.
As always, the moment we find out more about L4D2 you’ll be the first to know!
