My 2010 Gaming Resolutions

The following post was blatantly ripped off inspired by Kraid’s post over at Destructoid.  When the 2010 started it didn’t even occur to me to set gamer resolutions, but after thinking about it there are a lot of games I wish to complete and achievements I wish to unlock that I haven’t gotten around to yet.  So, bearing that in mind, I give you my top 10 personal gamer resolutions for 2010!

1. Complete Mass Effect

No, not Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect.  I got to about level 16 or so in the original a few years back and traded it under some pretense.  I felt guilty too considering it was a gift from my friend, Jake.  But now, I’ve re-acquired it and am slowly but surely making my way through the main story missions as well as the side quests.  It’s a really good game, but a few graphical hitches and frequent loading screens made it an easy one to trade in at the time.  Now, however, it’s amazing story and the prospect of importing my version of Commander Shepherd for a Mass Effect 2 playthrough (where, as I understand it many of the shortcomings of the first have been addressed) has me once again soldiering up with Wrex and Ashley Williams to track down Saren.

2. Complete Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.

Ever since Circle of the Moon came out on GBA, I’ve had an addiction to portable Castlevania titles.  They’re fun, addictive, and it’s easy to play in chunks and just snap the DS shut.  However, with the most recent Castlevania on DS I just never got around to finishing it for some reason.  It’s a shame too because in my experience each Castlevania has been tweaked just enough to be better than its predecessor.

3.  Unlock my Zombie Hand shirt Avatar Award in Left 4 Dead 2

I like customizing my avatar as much as the next player, but I don’t much feel like paying real world dollars/Microsoft’s magical pixie dust points for the privilege.  But, if you give me the opportunity to unlock these kind of rewards by completing in-game tasks?  Well, hand me a chain saw and let’s get slaying, partner!  I think I’m about halfway to the necessary 10,000 kills to complete this one, but given Nicole’s affection for the game I’m sure I won’t have trouble getting her to assist me in my quest to make my avatar a virtual, walking advertisement for zombie genocide.

4. Catalog our game collection

Nicole and I have a lot of games.  Between PC, N64, NES, Super NES, GB, GB Color ,GBA, DS, Xbox, PS, PS2, PS3, 360, Mac, Dreamcast, and even a Virtual Boy one somewhere, we’re probably talking at least a few hundred if not more.  What drives me batty though is if I’m at a flea market, garage sale, or some other place where I can purchase rare games and I can’t recall if I already have it.  So, my goal in 2010 is to have an organized list of sorts showing exactly what games we have and given the merging of mine and Nicole’s collection, how many we have of each.

5. Level a separate character to 80 in World of Warcraft

Yes, I love my paladin in ways that would be most frowned upon in Azeroth, but she needs a rest.  Since I’m too lazy to disable my account and Blizzard likes to capitalize on this, I’d like to have either an Alliance character ready for when Cataclysm makes its debut, or at least finish getting my Death Knight from lowly level 60ish stature to something more respectable.

6. Find a Dreamcast in good condition

I loved the Dreamcast, though I sold it off (as I’m so often guilty of) in lieu of some shiny new system/game I’m sure.  I had a particular fondness for Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Crazy Taxi, Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage, and of course, Marvel vs. Capcom 2.  While it’s not entirely pressing that I have one right this instant, I’d still appreciate having it back in my collection.

7. Play a game I wouldn’t normally dream of touching

I’m not necessarily referring to Barbie Horse Adventures here, but I would like to broaden my horizons a bit.  I’d like to think I keep a fairly wide range of genres in my repertoire of gaming, from FPS to stealth action, RTS to rhythm, RPG to racing.  However, I know there  are a lot of games, many of which are critically acclaimed, that I simply gloss over on store shelves for whatever reason.  So, with that in mind at some point I’d like to take a hard look at those I most often overlook and see if I can find something rewarding there.

8. Show more love to my PS3

Despite a variety of great games that are out for the PS3, I scarcely use it for more than a Blu Ray player I’m afraid.  I’m ashamed to admit even the input I use on my TV lists the input as Blu Ray.  Yes, I should be rushing through many of the great exclusives that have recently come to light such as Uncharted 2, MAG, and the God of War Collection, but I simply haven’t had the inclination.  In 2010 though, I do aspire to bite into some of its more luscious titles.

9. Write at least one game review a month

I’ve done plenty of observations or thoughts on particular titles, but haven’t churned out a full review in quite some time.  I realize many of you don’t live and die by how I feel about a game, but perhaps strictly for my own edification and to further hone my skills in writing objectively it’s something I’d like to devote some more time to.

10. Break 60,000 achievement points

Sure it’s shallow and the points amount to very little save for bragging rights, but it’s still something I enjoy.  I guess it’s because achievement points are the new hi-score boards for this generation.  That and I’m quite fond of the achievement unlocked sound.

So there you have it.  What gaming resolutions are you looking to set in 2010?
