Mechanics from the Rise of the Eldrazi Expansion

While we’re only a few weeks away from the next MTG expansion, I figured I’d show some images I shamelessly stole from Wizards of the Coast to let everyone know what they’re in for in the latest expansion.

Those who have followed the Zendikar block so far have seen the range of events affecting the planes as we know it beginning with the Zendikar expansion where in a world of small civilizations of treasure hunters, massive hedrons have floated into the sky and geological upheaval has run rampant. After this first expansion was done we were treated to Worldwake with its ‘A world enraged.’ tagline that expanded upon these themes and brought with it loads of powerful new cards.  However, unlike the previous expansion there are no multi-colored cards, but only mono.

The Phases of GeeksPodcast

The following post is self-degrading in so much as I’m readily poking fun at our site, but that’s my favorite type of humor anyways so I’m still counting this one as a win.  I suppose before I could dive into the phases of GeeksPodcast I’d have to first talk about what GeeksPodcast is according to us, the authors.  Speaking purely for myself and without regard to Nicole’s perceptions, GeeksPodcast is simply a site where we began with a podcast and ended up focusing way more on the blogging aspect mainly due to time constraints.  While the podcast will make a comeback, I’ve given up saying when said comeback will come to fruition, but I digress.

So what is GeeksPodcast?  Despite the fairly blatant misnomer, it’s a place where you can learn about Nicole and I as well as weigh in on a bunch of geeky stuff and that’s about it.  The reason I’m talking about our ‘phases’ as it were, is because we’ve noticed (and by extension surely you have noticed) that the only consistency our site offers is inconsistency.  Sometimes a string of posts come without warning and fluidly, other times not so much.  Sometimes we’ll spend a whole week covering video games, only to spend another 3 salivating about World of Warcraft.  The flavor of the week now?  Magic the Gathering with only a splash of video game coverage that Nicole is clinging to pretty hard. There really isn’t a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it save for  our sincere hopes that it will appeal to, well, other people like you who appreciate a wide range of geekery including, but not limited to, and not including all of the following:

  • Video Games
  • Magic the Gathering
  • Cosplay
  • Robot Vacuums
  • Silent Hill
  • Star Trek
  • Gadgets
  • Pink, sparkly, 20-sided dice
  • Anything in the tag cloud
  • Cheese Whiz
  • A general appreciation for doing things better
  • Being unapologetic (but not a douche) about the things that make you happy, even if people think it’s strange or can’t relate

I suppose you could say that there’s a rantish quality to this post, but my aim was simply to put what’s on my mind out there.  It’s been great fun so far with GeeksPodcast and I can’t wait to see how it continues to evolve, but part of that growth sometimes means engaging in some self-criticism; so I figured why not put that criticism out for the world to see as well?  At worst some of you will be nodding your head in agreement, contemplating how best to shun us from your RSS feeds, but at best it might inspire some of you that are new to blogging to take a chance and appreciate that it isn’t an exact science, but a world of possibility ready to be explored where your creativity can flourish as much as you allow it.

That’s all for now, but thanks for reading and sticking with us, even through our goldfish-like ADD when it comes to our interests.

A Victory For Garruk

As has become recent custom, Jon and I again found ourselves locked in glorious battle over the weekend, summoning creatures and enchantments to do our bidding as we ticked each others life away. Nicole was stuck working so we figured we’d geek out a bit and play a few one-on-one games. The first was the best though, as we were both playing mono-green decks with his focused on some terrifying beasts while I relied on the indomitable battle-wisdom of my pre-constructed Garruk duel deck (complete with pretty foil!). The problem was that thanks to a questionable draw he wasn’t quite as indomitable as I would’ve liked. Come to think of it, I didn’t even get to put Garruk into play which is a shame considering how useful he is when played properly.  But, even without him the battle waged on even though I was at a palpable disadvantage early on.

The WoW Infographic

I have a special place in my heart for infographics and the below is no exception.  Of course I knew that Blizzard was wildly popular and whatnot, but to the degree outlined below I had no idea. I also had a hard time believing that humans are the most popular race.  I mean, if the data supports it fine, but I’ve always been partial to the undead myself (and maybe blood elves once in a while…)  Check out the numbers!

Rapture’s Leftovers

Yeah, the ugly bugger there on the left?  That’s concept art for one of the bad guys that got axed from the original Bioshock.  There’s a whole slew of them if you want to head over to the Irrational Games Insider post and check them out.  There’s a certain…adorableness to some of them that I simply can’t deny, but maybe that’s why they were removed in the first place.  I always love getting a sneak peak behind the development process of some of my favorite titles for this very reason though; to see just how much creative material was churned out, poured over, and ultimately scrapped before deciding with no uncertainty that these parts make up what people will love.  I can’t imagine it’s a very simple process, but just the same it’s interesting to see that one point a character named ‘Yam Hand’ was being seriously considered in a board room somewhere and shown the same measure of respect as say, the Macy’s fall lineup campaign.  Enjoy!

You know how I do!

Because the boys have been getting involved with Magic a lot recently, this inevitably means I will be involved, at least a little bit, with this Magic trend. However, this doesn’t mean I can’t edit my game to be more ‘me’. The other day after a journey to the Guard Tower, Joshua brought me a vial full of pink, sparkly dice, which happen to match the pink deck box I already have. Now all I need to do is make is a red-white deck and find some pink counters. Everyone will be most threatened. ;)

L4D and The Passing: Someone Will Die?!

A couple of days ago Valve announced the tagline for the newest piece of DLC coming out for Left 4 Dead 2: “Nobody Lives Forever.” So we already knew the original survivors were going to be joining the new ones in Left 4 Dead 2‘s new DLC, ‘The Passing’, but Chet Faliszek of Valve spilled that one of the original four would have to make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of the team at the end of the campaign. So who will it be?! There is much speculation being tossed around (some of it racist, some of it sexist), but in the end we’ll just have to wait until a more solid release date is announced.

‘The Passing’ will be a three-part long campaign that takes place between ‘Dead Center’ and ‘Dark Carnival’. It’ll also feature a new kind of uncommon infected, known as the “Fallen Survivor”, who, once killed, can supply the team with ammunition and medical supplies.

Valve also plans on releasing a piece of DLC for the original L4D detailing how the original survivors got to the south in the first place. So far it’s rumored to come out about a month after ‘The Passing’. More info soon!
