Today, Jon, Eric, Erin, and myself walked into Comic Town as mere mortals, but emerged as DCI sanctioned tournament players. The game? Magic: The Gathering. Specifically, we were there to attend the Rise of the Eldrazi Prerelease party. Normally I’d head to The Guardtower to get my fix, but unfortunately they didn’t participate in the prerelease. Regardless, I’ll now chronicle the experience so that those of you who are also new to tournament play can know what to expect and those of you that are far more experienced can have a hearty, nostalgic laugh at my noobishness.

Review: Kick-Ass
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of seeing Kick-Ass. In fact, I only went because Jon woke me up from a nap I was taking and rushed Nicole and I to the theater last night, effectively kidnapping us. Haunting presuppositions of a campy, Mystery Men-ish comic book movie flooded my mind when met with the prospect of seeing this film. However, as with most things Jon drags us to, he was completely right in doing so. In fact Kick-Ass was so Kick-Ass that it forced me to get that terrible line out at the beginning if the review instead of the end of the review. But it’s not enough to say that it IS kick ass, so hit the jump to find out why Kick-Ass comes out of the gates with fury, setting up the summer movie season in a big way.

Blizzard Store Now Selling Mounts and Pets
This is new to me, but maybe some of you out there have already known about this. Apparently, the Blizzard Store doesn’t just sell cute and cuddly real world items, but is now selling virtual pets and mounts like the badass-looking celstial mount over there on the left. My WoW account’s been cancelled for a few months now as I anxiously await the release of Cataclysm, but new content like this makes me itch to come back. Even though that mount is $25.00-like, real world dollars, it still looks incredible and I wouldn’t mind having the bragging rights of flying one around Orgrimmar whenever full flight is enabled in the next expansion.
Would you be willing to pay real money for this?
Why I’m Not Touching Final Fantasy XIII…yet
Once again, Penny Arcade pretty much sums it up perfectly. It’s not that I think the game looks bad or the combat doesn’t look interesting, I just don’t feel like spending the playtime of an entire game just to make it to the good part. In truth, I’ve only finished Final Fantasy VIII and most of VII, but this was back when I was in high school. Having a career and maintaining a website (even one largely devoted to games) just doesn’t lend itself well to diving into a game this massive in scope. Granted, this may sound hypocritical considering how much I adore World of Warcraft, but that’s different; in WoW I can take guiltless breaks from play and feel content knowing that my character is at least aquiring rest, making my return all the more alluring. It also doesn’t force me to stay in the starting zone for nearly 40 hours.
Maybe someday when I’ve got a bit more free time I’ll tackle an adventure of this magnitude, but for right now I’ll stick to digestable 10-20 hour games and see how that goes.
Anyone else out there finding Final Fantasy XIII alluring but doesn’t want to put the time into it?
Video: Unboxing the Official iPad Case from Apple
Despite having purchased multiple special editions of various games and even the iPad itself ,for whatever reason I decided to do my first ‘unboxing’ video using the iPad’s official case. I can’t rightly call it a review on account of not having put the gadget condom through its paces yet, but just the same I thought I’d throw a video together. So check out the video below if you’re one of those eager to know what to expect from the only official protective solution for Apple’s latest wonder device!
MTG Mini Booster Comes with Not-so-Mini Mythic Rare
Jon and I were at Wal-Mart over Easter weekend on the way back from hanging out with Nicole’s family. We like to scour through big retailers’ stockpile of Magic stuff because they will sometimes have older boosters or Fat packs that you can’t find anymore, often at discounted prices because they’re just trying to clear inventory. Unfortunately (or fortunately I suppose) this Wal-Mart didn’t have anything like that. All they seemed to have were the latest Phyrexia vs. The Coalition Duel Decks, some Worldwake boosters, and maybe 6 2010 Core Set mini-booster packs of 6 cards each with no guarantee that you’ll even pull a rare. Instead, WOTC says that the 6th card in these packs is simply a ‘wild card’ that could be anything and likely a common.
Well, fortune must have smiled on me that day because I managed to pull this classy looking gentleman-
I know I’ve previously touched on my affinity for Garruk, so it was delightful to get another one with different art to boot! It was actually especially fortuitous considering I was thinking of buying another one of him individually at Troll and Toad for a deck I was working on at the time.
So anyways, the next time you see one of those mini-boosters and are tempted to turn up your nose at it, remember that there could be a mythic rare lurking behind there.
7 iPhone OS 4.0 Features Revealed
A couple of days ago I made some predictions surrounding what Apple would be announcing for its latest version of the iPhone OS 4.0. Not to toot my own horn, but I was right on more than a few of them (including my prediction that Jobs would wear a turtleneck were he in attendance). So let’s get right to it and take a look at the 7 announcements regarding the latest iPhone OS and how they’ll affect us as iPhone die-hards.
The Young Veins in Columbus: Take a Vacation!
Here at Geekspodcast.com we had the privilege of taking a vacation last night. Our destination? “The Basement” concert venue in the Arena district of the luxurious Columbus, Ohio to enjoy the sounds of Look Afraid, Bad Rabbits, The Young Veins, and Foxy Shazam. In my usual concert fashion, I made Joshua show up at 4:00PM with me so we could guarantee front row. I (tried to) read for my literature class, Joshua played The Simpsons video game on his iPhone and we waited impatiently for 6:00PM to show up.
5 Geek Books for Your Coffee Table
The other day I was going through a bunch of the books I’ve accumulated and realized that I’ve got a fair amount of geekish books. I don’t mean solely books you’d expect a geek to read like Asimov, Douglas Adams, or those of the comic variety, but even a few that I can say with confidence that you wouldn’t definitively find laying around in your dentist’s waiting area. Listed below are just some such books with Amazon links where you can grab them if you feel so inclined.
Geek Chic: The Ultimate Guide to Geek Culture
Now, normally I’d like for you, the reader to use us as your guide to geek culture, but in truth GeekChic: The Ultimate Guide to Geek Culture is far more comprehensive than GeeksPodcast at the moment. It covers nearly every conceivable face of geekdom from cyberpunk’s roots and the invention of the Rubik’s Cube to the rise of Kraftwerk aaaand Teledildonic Sex toys? Huh… oddly enough I have this book right in front of me and I swear to you that last one was just what I happened to first read under ‘Geek Miscellaneous’ in the table of contents. It’s also a full-color book packed with 157 pages of illustrations (minus the dildonic sex toys so you’re safe…for now.)
My buddy, Jake got me this one year for either my Birthday or Christmas I can’t remember. It’s great fun to flip through and does an awesome job of chronicling some of geekdom’s high (see: Pong) and low points (see: Nokia N-Gage)
The Alphabet of Manliness – Extended Edition
Because Maddox is unarguably the king of the known universe, it’d be
downright stupid and dangerous not to include his publication on this list lest we incur his wrath. If you’ve never learned your ABC’s and especially of you have small children in your house, The Alphabet of Manliness is a must have if you want them to develop properly into ball-smashingly awesome lumberjack pirates.
Aside from being simply educational, it’s also packed with awesome illustrations in case your dumbass doesn’t know how to read. In fact the latest edition has even more content than the first making it almost as much of an honor as having Maddox himself punch you in the face! If you’re still uncertain as to the far-reaching and undeniable power of Maddox’s balls, I implore you to follow this link from his book tour as proof of the amount of ass-kickery he’s capable of displaying.
The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11 1/2 Anniversary Edition
It’s no secret that Nicole and I are huge fans of Penny arcade so this had to make the list considering the awesome addition to your PA collection it will make. Originally planned as a 10 year anniversary book, Jerry and Mike just Got busy and so we were left with the Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade. It’s strange to think about them having written Penny Arcade for over 10 years. I remember reading them right before I went off to college, but it’s strange to think that I’ve been enjoying their comic for such a long time. The artwork has only gotten better through the years and it’s awesome taking a look back at just how far they’ve come from a couple of guys writing webcomics about videogames to the geek icons they are today. Bonus points are awarded on account of the sweet unicorn ride depicted on the cover!
The Art of Intrusion
Straight from one of the most influential security experts in history, The Art of Intrusion is a collection of horrific cyber security tales gathered and verified by Kevin
Mitnick. While he’s also written The Art of Deception, The Art of Intrusion is less technical and focuses less on the mechanics of the attacks and more on illustrating glaring security holes that sysadmins should be on the lookout for. Even if you’re not tech savvy it’s a great read and made better considering all of the stories are true. Books like this should be required reading for anyone in the network administration business or anyone who has an interest in taking better steps to secure their (or their organization’s) data. While it’s true there isn’t a lock on this planet that can’t be opened with something other than its key, The Art of Intrusion illustrates just how many alternatives to a lock’s key there really are.
The Cult of Mac
Alright, my bias in the area of personal computing is starting to show a bit I realize, but if any of you out there consider yourselves Apple fanboys (or girls) you should enjoy this immensely. Written by Leander Kahney, The Cult of Mac focuses almost exclusively on the Mac community as opposed to a history of Apple’s various products. Odds are if you have an Apple logo on your car (or shaved into your head) you’ve already picked this one up. But if you’re new to Apple and want a good comprehensive look at the impact it’s had on our society as a whole and some fiercely dedicated individuals, it’s a great read.
What other geek books are sitting on your shelf?
