Holy Wow, Nintendo

For the first time in a while Nintendo managed to dominate over the other two big boys at this year’s E3. Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move (and Twisted Metal surprise) were fun, but its pretty clear they’re aiming for a wider audience and the casual gamer. In the words of one of my co-workers, Nintendo was all “been there, done that” with move controls and decided to please their fan base.

Don’t Cha Wanna?

I’m not really sure if this falls under any category for Geekspodcast, but I thought this was the most awesome competition ever. Apparently, the Fantanas (the singing ladies who find parched citizens and save them with delicious, colorful soda) are back in the advertising world and Coke is holding a contest to find the 4th Fanta. I almost want to enter for the chance to wear the 60′s-ish clothing and for the inevitable lifetime supply of Fanta! But you have to sing and dance to the Fanta song (without music) in your audition tape, and I don’t think I could respect myself if I ended up doing that.

If you have what it takes and are shameless, you can enter the contest here.

It’s that time again!

…where I no longer have to wake up at 7AM each morning! School is out, and I will be back to write more for GP and focus my attention on more important areas of my life than school, like video games and technology. This was a tough school year, and after a slew of A’s I think it is time to relax a bit. ;)

I’ll be around to cover some of E3 and its highlights, new up and comings, May and June video game reviews, my new phone adventures, and of course what is happening in our personal life. Stay tuned, and hopefully we will have a surprise for everybody later this week!

Dear Apple: Stop the Anti-Flash Crusade

Hi Apple,

I’d like to talk to you today about your decision to not support Flash.

We get that you’ve spurred lots of innovation over the years, but your image has taken some serious hits lately what with the anti-porn defense for the app store, violent search warrants, and factory worker suicides.  You were the bad boy on the block, eschewing our perceptions of  lifeless corporate routine by shaking things up and well, thinking different. But now, you’ve missed the mark by telling us what to think and tarnished that grand image you’ve cultivated over all these years.

I’ve no problem with your decision to not support Flash. You’ve given us one of the best operating systems on the planet and we thank you for it and it’s your decision as to what technology you wish to employ on your devices. However, what I do have a problem with is the manner in which you’ve chosen to justify that decision. Beating up on another company’s technology, especially one with such a rich history of supporting your products is kind of a dick move.

In fact, it’s starting to look like you’ve gotten a little too big for your turtleneck. Innovation needn’t be fueled by slanderous undermining. As new technologies emerge, their efficiency will propel their adoption just fine, without the need for browbeating their predecessors. Much in the same way the advantages of digital distribution became apparent over traditional media, so too will web developers latch on to the next means of producing dynamic web content, leaving Flash to gracefully join the likes of 10baset networks and vb6.

You know we love you Apple, and we want others to see what made you so special in the first place, but as it stands today we need you to go back to being the hammer- not the telescreen.

Sincerely,
Joshua

A Short Break for my Birthday

I will be taking a short break from posting on account of my birthday tomorrow.  Regular posts should resume shortly, but because I’m officially moving into my late twenties, I need a few days to evaluate my life.  To think about what really matters.  To stop, take a few deep breaths, and take a mental inventory of what drives me and how to accomplish my goals.

Actually, all of that’s just a fancy way of saying I want to chill out and play Red Dead Redemption for a few days.  I know it’s selfish, but I haven’t kicked back with a 360 game in a while…well, except for Alan Wake, but that’s besides the point.  The point is that I need to satiate my hunger for a good spaghetti western and this is precisely how I intend to do it!

Anyways, because of some weird timing, Nicole and I won’t be actually celebrating my birthday for a couple more weeks but after all that’s out of the way I’ll be sure to post about the particle accelerator I’m sure to receive as a present.

So take care, internet, and I’ll be back in a few days!

PAX East Returns to Boston in 2011 and 2012

Yes, PAX East ended weeks ago, but I still wanted to put this up for everyone in Ohio or just generally on the East side who are looking to attend next year.  Apparently the turnout was nothing short of phenomenal and they’ll be moving to a more spacious venue next year to accommodate the over 60,000 geeks that turned up this year.  Joystiq has the lowdown on all of the details if you’d like to read more, but rest assured that Nicole and I fully plan to be in attendance for PAX East 2011 to do our best and photograph/jot down one of the biggest nerd festivals on the planet!

Listen to Dark Side of the Moon in 8-Bit!

I ran across this the other day at Geeks of Doom and while it’s apparently only available in YouTube format (below), you can watch/listen to more if you go to Akanakao’s YouTube Channel.  It’s pretty trippy and I love 8-bit music, but I don’t think I could listen to it regularly lest it sully the memories of my youth…which, were really adaptations of memories of my father’s youth so, there that is.  Enjoy!
