There you are, staring wistfully at your 3DS. It stares into you and you back into it. Discouraged, you find yourself hoping that someone, anyone will walk by with a 3DS in their pocket as you stare off into the distance from your lonely porch, a comically out-of-place tumbleweed rolling on by as you wait for that beautiful green LED on the back hinge to light up. ‘sigh’….
Well, have I got news for you, champ! You don’t have to sit there all mopey-faced and downtrodden because here are some surefire ways to get your streetpass count up so fast you’ll be rescuing yourself from that bizarre Mii-prison in no time! Some of these tips take a little more effort than others and some are downright deplorable, but I’m not here to split-hairs, I’m here to get results! *Slams fist on desk menacingly as if addressing superior officer regarding unorthodox police work criticisms*.
That lonely porch example might seem hilarious but I bet it hits closer to home than you’d imagine. Truthfully though, this is the quickest way you can actually get your precious StreetPass on is to…
1)Walk the STREET
2)PASS someone with a 3DS
It’s simple but I give you my word your odds of getting a StreetPass tag will increase directly if you stop staring longingly into your suburban abyss hoping a pack of those neighborhood teenage troublemakers will come by.
Oh, speaking of the suburbs
GET OUT OF THE SUBURBS
Unless you live in the most gamer-centric community imaginable (and I’m sure you don’t) then you’ve got to get to where the people are because more people = higher chance of glorious StreetPass rewards. I’ll say that again;
MOAR PEOPLE = MOAR STREETPASS. Got it? Good.
That being said, don’t expect to go to your local bingo hall and start raking in the digital rewards. You’ve got to go to places where there are likely to be a high concentration of gamers.
Some great examples include:
- Comic/Game/Anime/Geek Conventions
- Game Stores
- College Campuses
On a side note about conventions- If you can make it to PAX you’re going to get so many StreetPasses you’ll need an extra battery just to last. It’s the mecca of consumer gaming shows and it’s so assured that you’ll make out like a bandit that there are entire forum posts devoted to it at the Penny Arcade website and even some StreetPass meetup groups on Facebook to help facilitate it. So, if you have the means to attend you’d be highly advised to do so! Don’t believe me? Look at this video of a few gamers getting hundreds of street passes in minutes. (With bonus appearance by Jeff Gerstman!)
Of Course, even if you aren’t going anywhere completely interesting you should still…
KEEP IT ON YOU
While of course you’re not going to get StreetPasses if you meet other pepole who have a 3DS and you don’t have yours with you, you’d be surprised at some of the unexpected places you can pick up a tag.
Last week I was driving straight home from work and when I got there was pleased to find I somehow got a Street Pass tag. Since I didn’t stop anywhere that means, yes! I got a DRIVE BY STREETPASS! Now the range of a 3DS is purportedly 60-100 feet so it’s completely possible to get one from someone else in a moving vehicle and it looks like I’m not the only one either.
So, even if you’re not gearing up to go hard-charging into a massive gamer convention with assured StreetPass potential, every now and then you’ll get surprised just the same and that’s one of the funnest aspects of StreetPass anyways- the surprise.
Of course, if you just plain hate surprises of failing that live in a barren wasteland where it’s completely impractical to use any of the above steps.
USE STREETPASS COINS
It’s fun collecting other people’s Miis I realize but if all you’re really out for is the ability to unlock more cute hats and collect puzzle pieces you could forego running into other people altogether and just concentrate on accumulating coins by walking around with your 3DS.
If you’re less savory you could even use the below exploit to bypass 10 play coin limit. Of course it sounds like a bit more work than it’s worth in my opinion. But it sounds better than my original idea to strap my 3DS to an elliptical machine in my local gym. Still, use at your own peril!
So there ya have it! Some sound tips on how to increase your sweet, sweet StreetPasses.
