Packrat and Ten Pin Alley’s Walking Dead Season 2 Premiere Party!

Last night was nothing but pure awesome.  A bunch of us headed out to party at Ten Pin Alley with Packrat Comics and the undead while we eagerly awaited the season 2 premiere of The Walking Dead.

Haunted Columbus: Camp Chase Cemetary and the Lady in Gray

I love living in Columbus and a big part of that is the city’s history and weird little factoids.  My appreciation for it got me thinking that there might just be some horrifying or ghastly stories that I could illustrate from right here in the heart of Columbus for our 31 days of horror. So first up for the month?  Camp Chase Cemetery.

Come Bowl and Watch The Walking Dead with 199 Zombies

I’m dead serious (see what I did there?).  In case you didn’t know, Packrat Comics is partnering with 10 Pin Alley in Hilliard on October 16th to have the biggest, baddest zombie bash ever- BUT we need your help to make it a success.

As it stands only about 40 people have bought tickets to attend.  That’s awesome,  but I think we can do better.  It’s not just about supporting Packrat and Ten Pin Alley- I’m also being selfish because the most zombies I’ve ever been around at once I could probably count on one hand-

Well, physically anyways.

With that in mind, Nicole and I would love to hit the magic number of 200 not only because we love Jamie and Theresa over at Packrat, but also because we’re positively giddy at the thought of 200 zombies shuffling around and bowling. (I’m sure in light of reduced mobility we can sweet talk Ten Pin Alley into turning off lane violations.)

Tickets are $25 unless you bring a friend then you can get multiple tickets for only $20! Think about how much you paid to bowl the last time you went with normal people and then think that you’ll also get:

  • Unlimited bowling
  • Pizza
  • Live music
  • Zombie Hunts
  • Costume and Trivia contest
  • The Walking Dead season 2 premiere showing on every screen plus a projector outside
  • The chance to meet and party with Special Effects God Tom Sullivan of Evil Dead

If zombies aren’t your thing it won’t break our hearts if you don’t attend.  What will break our hearts is if you don’t at least share this page with a friend or two who is nuts about zombies, bowling, or The Walking Dead.

Click here to purchase tickets online from Packrat OR you can buy them in person at Packrat Comics (Google maps link).

Also, anyone who can pick Nicole or I out of the crowd gets a free sticker!  (Sorry, it’s the best we could do after we ran out of gold-plated caviar dishes).

See ya there!

Ba-Con: Day 2 Go!

We’re sitting here at the booth and day 2 of Ba-Con 2011 is just kicking off.  The free Bawls and bacon are certainly welcome, but what I’ve loved the most so far is all of the awesome people we’ve been able to meet and hang out with.  This is just a quick recap of some of the

Geektress’s  Brenda Kirk is in the booth to the right of us and has some incredible artwork at her booth.  She’s also been kind enough to school Nicole and I on a range of information related to conventions as this is the first one at which we’ve been an exhibitor.

To our left, Thom Robertson, the creator of Artemis, a Spaceship Bridge Simulator (See: Kobayashi Maru) is taking another crew in to gear up for another mission on a projector and a bunch of networked laptops. I had the pleasure of trying this out yesterday and can say definitively that it’s an experience like no other.  Splitting the responsibilities of carrying out starship missions in space among a crew of friends is thrilling!

We also got to hang out with Mike Eshelman of 8-Bit Esh who has crafted some of the finest Perler Bead Art ever seen, including a jaw-dropping 4600-bead Vincent Van Gogh portrait!  Mike was also cool enough to do an interview with us that we’ll be weaving into an upcoming video.

Well, that’s all for now but we’ll be sure to give some updates as Ba-Con continues!

Ba-Con Here we Come!

Nicole and I are working furiously to finish prep for Ba-Con which, in case you haven’t heard, starts tomorrow.  I use the word ‘furiously’ with unfortunate accuracy as we’ve been gathering our booth stuff together and there’s a sneak peak above there of Nicole getting our booth sign ready.  We hope to see you all at our booth where we’ll be:

-Throwing down in Mario Kart for DS
-Orchestrating (hopefully) a photo-scavenger hunt with some moderately entertaining prizes
-Podcasting live on all 3 days

So swing by, sign our sign, give us some high fives and we’ll share some popcorn with you.  See you there!

A Change of Pace – The Arnold Classic 2011 in Pictures

Physical fitness isn’t something we regularly cover on here, but that doesn’t mean we don’t respect it.  I’ve been working out with my friend, Chris who has been forcing me to work out against my will.  Ok, that’s not entirely true but he does know an awful lot about physical fitness and has gone to the Arnold Classic almost every single year of its existence.  This year he asked me to go with him for the first time.

The convention itself is equal parts intrigue and horror as the people walking around are either a pinnacle of physical fitness or a mortifying look into what steroid abuse can bring.  Regardless, there were a lot of neat things to see so if you’re wondering what kind of stuff lies at the Arnold Classic then please, take a gander at the pics below!

Ohayocon 2011 in Pictures

ohayocon201

Below you will find an assortment of pictures from mine and Nicole’s adventure at Ohayocon 2011.  It was an awesome, awesome time and I really was astonished at what a good time I had.  It’s not that I thought it would be awful, but being mainly centered around anime (in which I am not well versed) I wasn’t sure what to expect.  Having now enjoyed everything it has to offer (mostly) I’m more than ready to return next year, but will likely want to stay for the entire 3 days.  Nicole will probably weigh in on this at some point, but between meeting a lot of great artists, meeting the girl behind the voice of Mad Moxxi, going to an enormous nerd rave, and seeing a packed meeting room with geeks anxious to debate the Zelda timeline I wasn’t disappointed.  Check out more pics below!

Columbus Hotspots: Indian Run Falls

Nicole wanted to go for a walk together the other night and while I was just coming off a delightful nap.  Unknown to me she didn’t just mean a stroll around the neighborhood, but rather she wanted to drive to someplace special as a surprise.  After groggily hopping in the car with her and stopping for gas, we ended up over at Indian Run Falls, a nice little 3 and 1/2 acre nature trail in the woods right off of Corbins Mill Drive in Dublin.

Columbus Hotspots: Glow Putt

So Jon, Jake and a few of our other friends went out Glow Putting this weekend over in Gahanna and while the photo gallery below may look more like a jungle rave, it really is good wholesome fun for the whole family.  It’s $7 to play 18 holes of indoor glow-in-the-dark putt-putt and we had a blast.  Plus, if you get a hole-in-one on the 18th hole you get a free slushie!  Granted I got two hole-in-ones *brushes shoulder off*, but unfortunately it wasn’t on the last hole.  Despite my sadness at missing out on a free Italian Ice, if you’re looking to kill an hour or two and find yourself on that side of town, it’s certainly worth a look.  Check out some admittedly low-res photos below and you can learn more by going to their official site.

My Trip to Lake Hope

I’ll have to add some more photos later this week when I’m not quite as tired, but the photo above is one of regrettably few that I took over this weekend.  The weather was beautiful, with partly cloudy skies and the temperature was right around 72 for the duration of the trip.  We did a bit of everything from shooting guns to fishing and going on a short hike.  We also did other manly things like set up camp at night, cut firewood, and forced a bear to strangle another bear that we then rassled into submission and sent him on his merry way.  Seriously, for 4 nerds out in the country we were that badass.

Save for hanging out with some of my closest friends around the fire and goofing off though, I have to say the favorite part of the trip for me was finally getting to finish R.A. Salvatore’s most excellent Sojourn.

A good friend of mine turned me on to Drizzt when he got me the Icewind Dale trilogy for Christmas a few years ago and I’ve been absolutely hooked on the character ever since.  While Jon, Jake, and Kevin went fishing, I preferred the shade of a nearby tree, taking in the remainder of the afternoon engrossed in the tale of Drizzt’s adjustment to the surface world after fleeing Menzoberranzan.

Frankly I don’t get an awful lot of time to just sit and enjoy a good book and being out in the sprawling wilderness of Zeleski State Forest seemed as fitting a backdrop as ever for me to finally do just that.  It was a great read only further enhanced by the atmosphere and was incredibly relaxing.  Of course, while all this reading was happening the guys were busy fishing, but I couldn’t much be bothered to join in being so close to the end of another awesome tale by Salvatore.

Again, this is just a quick post about heading out to camp, but sometime this week after I’ve gathered the rest of the photos I’ll be sure to expand a bit ,maybe with a timeline of what all we got into.  I will say though that if you have the means, I’d highly recommend making a visit there though!
