Why I’m Not Surprised by the 3DS Price Drop

In case you haven’t heard, Nintendo dropped the price of its 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99.  Also, for those early adopters like Nicole and I who bought the system at launch, we’re being dubbed ‘Ambassadors’ and provided we connect online with our systems by midnight on August 11th will be able to download 20 games for free of the NES and GBA variety.

While I certainly appreciate the free games, I’m not shocked to hear that the system isn’t selling that well.  Between the reports of headaches, lackluster lineup, and the continual increase in games played on mobile phones, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone that this wouldn’t be as strong a mobile entry as Nintendo’s past efforts.

What do you think?  Was the 3DS doomed from launch or will a price drop and the forthcoming holiday season be kind to Nintendo?

Ba-Con 2011 – Interview with Thom Robertson, Creator of Artemis

Continuing the rest of our Ba-Con coverage, below is my interview with Thom Robertson, the creator of Artemis.  Now, I should say that while I did get to interview him about his game, I also had the pleasure of playing it and let me say it truly is a fantastic experience.  The gameplay is tight, and having a group of friends stepping into the shoes of the Enterprise crew (so to speak) is crazy fun!  I put the link in the video, but in case you don’t wanna watch me yammer on just head on over to the official Artemis website and try the demo for yourself- you won’t be disappointed!

Ba-Con: Day 2 Go!

We’re sitting here at the booth and day 2 of Ba-Con 2011 is just kicking off.  The free Bawls and bacon are certainly welcome, but what I’ve loved the most so far is all of the awesome people we’ve been able to meet and hang out with.  This is just a quick recap of some of the

Geektress’s  Brenda Kirk is in the booth to the right of us and has some incredible artwork at her booth.  She’s also been kind enough to school Nicole and I on a range of information related to conventions as this is the first one at which we’ve been an exhibitor.

To our left, Thom Robertson, the creator of Artemis, a Spaceship Bridge Simulator (See: Kobayashi Maru) is taking another crew in to gear up for another mission on a projector and a bunch of networked laptops. I had the pleasure of trying this out yesterday and can say definitively that it’s an experience like no other.  Splitting the responsibilities of carrying out starship missions in space among a crew of friends is thrilling!

We also got to hang out with Mike Eshelman of 8-Bit Esh who has crafted some of the finest Perler Bead Art ever seen, including a jaw-dropping 4600-bead Vincent Van Gogh portrait!  Mike was also cool enough to do an interview with us that we’ll be weaving into an upcoming video.

Well, that’s all for now but we’ll be sure to give some updates as Ba-Con continues!

My L.A. Noire Review on FaN

Between Nicole’s graduation, work, my iMac hard drive failure and a slew of other things going on I apparently can’t be bothered to regularly update GeeksPodcast, BUT I certainly keep to my schedule as far as Fierce and Nerdy, so I’m not a total wash as it turns out.

So, if you’d like to read my fairly thorough review of L.A. Noire just follow this dashingly handsome link text and you’ll be on your way!

Our Video Tribute to L.A. Noire

Nicole and I have been loving L.A. Noire.  It’s an incredible leap forward for the industry and while I’m not going to launch into a review here, I will direct you to the video below this text.  However, before watching it realize that yes, we know it’s not perfect, but we tried to get it posted quick for everyone and hope you all enjoy watching it as much as we did making it!

How Sony Could’ve Handled the PSN Outage Better – FaN

I had a rough week or so at work keeping ultra busy but now I can update you by pointing you over to the most excellent Fierce and Nerdy to check out my latest post!  Having come through the PSN outage relatively unscathed (so far as I know) I thought I’d weigh in a bit on the debacle.  You can check it out right here and be sure to leave comments because that is my very life blood!

30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 6

Aaaand we’re back and in case you’re all wondering- yes, I sorted out the wings situation and it was delicious.  This video’s a little bit different because we brought on a debonaire friend of ours, Kyle.  So watch below and enjoy as we continue our (admittedly slow-paced) trek through 30 days of moderately hard-hitting video game questions!

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Sony for PSN Outage

Because the 360 is wholly our platform of choice, I guess it didn’t occur to me to do a post about PSN being down for over a week now.  However, now it’s getting ridiculous.  What began as an outage turned into an intrusion and then to a security analysis and now we’re learning that the personal information of millions of PSN users has probably been compromised.  Which, in a turn of events that should be surprising to absolutely no one a class action lawsuit has been filed on account of countless angry gamers for Sony’s herping to the point of derp.

I suppose I haven’t paid a horrible amount of attention to this development because that’s how little I use my PS3 and even when I do I could care less about PSN.  However, that doesn’t mean it’s not important and while at first I kind of laughed at Sony and shrugged it off for the fumble, with each passing day the shit gets proverbially more real.  I actually feel bad for them as one estimate believes this blunder will cost Sony a cool $24 billion dollars.  That’s billion.  With a ‘B’.  Ouch.

Crappy as the situation is I can feel only so much remorse for a company that releases a new firmware update with the same kind of regularity as my cockatiel’s bowel movements only to have such a massive security problem manifest itself this way.  Making matters worse is that their only real response has been to tell us that there isn’t a real response but they’ll keep us posted.  I guess you do what you can, but the more this escalates the uglier it gets.

Star Fox 64 3D Landing July 14th

I’ve been absolutely awestruck being jammed back into portable gaming once more.  My 3DS rarely leave my side, even if I’m not actively playing it I want those sweet, sweet coins and StreetPass notifications…whenever I can find them.  Anyways, while lately my game of choice has been Pokemon Black (outstanding by the way), I can feel myself yearning for some more actual 3DS games.  I’ve played a ton of Super Street Fighter 4: 3D Edition and Pilotwings Resort, but now I’m resorting to original DS games like Portrait of Ruin and the not-so-old Pokemon.

Thankfully, Destructoid is reporting that the official website for Star Fox 64 3D is up over at Nintendo and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.  I have a particular fondness for the original Star Fox as well as the 64 version.  The latter especially because it was my first experience ever with a feedback controller as the 64 game came with the Rumble Pack way back (can I say that?) in 1997.  The graphics charmed me back then so I can only imagine how much I’ll dig it now that I have 3D visuals floating out of a handheld device.

What about you?  Ready to rejoin Fox McCloud?  No?  Well how about a barrel roll? :D
