American Horror Story intrigued me when I first heard about it. There was something curious to me about a television series centering specifically on horror. I’m sure there have been some before, but generally I’m most familiar with television series that spooky elements (Lost, X-Files, Fringe, True Blood etc.) but not one that pitched itself on consistent horror. Even Dexter, the show about a serial killer is more of a character-driven drama than an attempt to mortify each episode.

Sherlock the Series
I was reading a blog post that I somehow stumbled upon and on an unrelated note the author had mentioned watching Sherlock on the BBC. I hadn’t heard about this series at all but love the character and also very much enjoyed the movie last year starring Robert Downey Jr. Having now watched the first episode I can definitely say it’s worth checking it out.
It’s a present-day version of the classic character and while the pilot’s a bit lengthy (nearly 1 and 1/2 hours) it does a fantastic job of setting up many of the characters from the Holmes universe. If you have the means and, ahem, if you have the internet then yes, you certainly DO then you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to give this a shot. I was apprehensive about the actor playing Sherlock but by the end of the episode I couldn’t help but enjoy his performance. The writing is good, the dialog strong, and it’s a fun new twist on an old favorite.
Ohayocon 2011
I promise it is actually Nicole and not Josh in some attempt to make it look like I’m keeping up with the website. I realize it has been a while, but let me tell you why.
Psychology 520 kicked my ass. I don’t think I’ve ever worked so hard in my life in one class. Not only were there assignments due like, every day, but a giant 15-page, APA-styled research paper was due at the end of the quarter about a social psychology experiment my group mates and I had to design. I got an A in the class.
But I also had to put Geekspodcast and all of the wonderful nerdy happenings on the back burner for a few months. I also quit working at (I’m finally going to say it) GameStop, so I’m not really in the loop of all of the latest hotness coming into the market. I guess I need to check Kotaku or Destructoid more often.
Anyway, the big topic of my getting-back-into-the-swing-of-things post is that Ohayocon is one day and nine hours away. I won’t be going on Friday, but I plan on being there most of Saturday (seeing as how a large chunk of my day will probably be spent waiting in the registration line). Ohayocon is a convention held in Columbus, Ohio which focuses on anime, touches on video games and is the perfect excuse for cosplaying. The last one is really the reason I’m doing it, not to mention Brina Palencia (the voice of my alter ego, Mad Moxxi) will be there. After debating Gem from Tron, something Steampunk-y (Ohayocon’s 2011 theme), Mad Moxxi and Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, I figured it made the most sense to go as Faye since the convention covers mostly anime.
The trouble now is I don’t know if I will get my awesome, official outfit in time. If all else I will get something that is half as amazing from Amazon.com that sort of resembles Faye’s clothing, but the one I ordered is absolutely perfect. Lets hope it gets here by Saturday! Pictures to come, obviously.
Actual Map of LOST Island
Did you ever wonder what the full island looked like geographically? Nicole and I just finished the show in its entirety and while I was very happy with the show’s finale, there are still a bunch of unanswered questions. Thankfully though, I never have to wonder about what the actual dimensions of the island were and where all the stations were located. Head on over to Sci Fi Wire for more!
Holy Wow, Nintendo
For the first time in a while Nintendo managed to dominate over the other two big boys at this year’s E3. Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move (and Twisted Metal surprise) were fun, but its pretty clear they’re aiming for a wider audience and the casual gamer. In the words of one of my co-workers, Nintendo was all “been there, done that” with move controls and decided to please their fan base.
Archer Debuts!
Archer, the anticipated new animated show from the fine people that brought us Frisky Dingo debuted their first episode tonight on FX. I was really bummed out upon the cancellation of Frisky Dingo and even the spin-off, The Extacles, so I was extremely excited when I heard that Adam Reed was making a new show. The plot centers around Sterling Archer, secret agent of ISIS whose boss is his mother. Working side by side with a smattering of other hilarious characters, he’s almost like Xander Crews re-incarnated with a deeper voice. He’s not overly bright, is a womanizer, and abuses his position to personal gain, but is so lovable in his own idiotic way that you can’t help but enjoy it. It airs Thursdays at 10:00pm EST.
Hall is as Brave IRL as his Character in ‘Dexter’
Michael C. Hall, the actor best known for his role as Dexter Morgan on the Showtime drama Dexter, announced today that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I suppose this post is a little more news-y than we usually go, but Dexter holds a very special place in your Geekspodcast hosts’ hearts, and this news was particularly heartbreaking.
However, he’s as optimistic as ever and considers himself ‘fortunate to have been diagnosed with an imminently treatable and curable condition’, which is currently in remission. He still plans on filming the fifth season of Dexter in the fall of 2010 and more importantly, will be undergoing treatment.
Dexter Season Four
Before I utter (type?) any words, there are going to be SPOILERS in this post. Reader, you’ve been warned!
As you can see from the promotional poster (which is available to the public so this is really no secret), Dexter is officially a dad! Season three ends cheerfully, giving Dexter season 4 a fresh, therefore unpredictable beginning. Shortly after the typical opener for the show, however, the viewer quickly realizes that Dexter’s clean streak only lasts so long. Once again he is plummeted onto a slippery slope of secrecy and attempting to manage what he calls his ‘Dark Passenger’. Read on for a more detailed synopsis and my POV.
A Revival?!
Everybody remembers 90′s Nickelodeon: the good ol’ days of Ren and Stimpy, Salute Your Shorts, Doug, and of course the game shows every kid would have emptied their piggy banks to be on: Legends of the Hidden Temple, What Would You Do, Guts… the list goes on. Sadly those days are over and Nick has replaced them with garbage like iCarly and Back at the Barnyard. But as of last year (and I had no idea this was on) Nick revived the old game show Guts, proving they’re capable of redeeming themselves afterall! The name has been changed to My Family’s Got GUTS, but the idea is the same: it is still a tournament between families, starting with 12 and through preliminaries crunching that number down to six and then three for the final episode. This time instead of points determining who wins, they rely on each family’s time, which will give them that much more of a headstart in the next round (for finals). Fortunately there is still an “Aggro Crag” at the end of the tournament – that 20-foot mountain that families climb as fast as they can to be the first to hit the victory button on top. This version even has a dude host with a Australian referee co-host, which is sort of like 90′s host Mike O’Malley and his British referee, Moira “Mo” Quirk (I’m trying to make connections here).
The show is currently on a hiatus but still has the green light for more episodes, and today I’m ordering cable so Joshua and I can watch it.
