I’m a huge Ghostbusters fan. So, with the new Ghostbusters trailer having made its debut, I thought I’d dip my toe in the Ghostbusters trailer analysis pool. Besides going over what we’re being shown and how it relates to the larger Ghostbusters universe, I also wanted to look into how the original Ghostbusters could make an appearance as themselves. I realize it’s already been pointed out time and again that director Paul Feig stated that this is an entirely new Ghostbusters movie with complete detachment from the original…but if that’s so concretely the case then why are we seeing the original logo, Slimer, proton packs, and a whole host of other blatant throwbacks to the source material? I’m not trying to tell Paul how to do his job, but if the new Ghostbusters trailer is any indication, it would appear it’s got a bit of an identity crisis.
BUT! That’s ok because with a little ingenuity I absolutely believe the new Ghostbusters film can drum up excitement for a new audience, while also staying faithful to the originals that are held in such a high regard by fans of the original film. Specifically, I think that both universes can exist simultaneously – not too unlike Marvel’s Ultimate universe and how it’s separate from the generally accepted Earth-616 continuity.
How is all of this magic available? Well, check out our Ghostbusters trailer analysis above in which I lay out step-by-step how not only the new Ghostbusters trailer provides some plausible evidence, but also how well-established Ghostbusters lore also supports the existence of both the old and new teams. Maybe not working together directly, but there’s definitely an opportunity for recognition there that I think would make Aykroyd proud. That is, assuming my wild theory comes to fruition…but we’ll just have to wait for the final product to find out!
Ghostbusters opens July 15h.
