60 Minute Reviews: Skyrim (and more)

I have decided after speaking with Josh that to start a regular article in which I play a game for 60 minutes and review it based purely on that time frame. With the release of Skyrim yesterday, I figure this is as good a time to start as any.

I arrived home after the midnight release of Skyrim (the normally 15 minute drive took me about 6 minutes) right around 12:15. The game was in my Xbox about 3 minutes later. It would have been sooner, but I had to let my dog out.

An Uber Awesome Manga: Bakuman

When I was hanging out with my friend in a manga section at bookstore last year, he strongly recommended Bakuman to me. I was very skeptical because I grew tired of clichés of manga that tends to feel very formulaic but when I began to read it, I was hooked.

Bakuman is about the creation of manga (which is like comics in the US but for Japan). It explores the aspirations and inspiration of 2 friends who are working together to create a manga to fulfill their dreams. It’s very easy to relate to the main characters because manga is a very volatile industry. They’re faced with creating good solid chapters on weekly basis in order to ensure that their series doesn’t end up getting cancelled.

Horrific Tales from a Midnight Launch for a Game I didn’t Want

For those of you being raised by a pack of wolves or who think that Angry Birds is a mainstream game, it may come as a shock that a major event in gaming occurred last night. Along with my good friend and founder of GeeksPodcast, Grand Master Joshua Irish, I attended the midnight release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I will state up front that my experience with the Call of Duty franchise is limited. I have played a handful of games of Zombies, finished the Modern Warfare 2 campaign in 4 hours, and now have played Modern Warfare 3 for about and hour. Needless to say, I’m not what you would call a fanatic, and I had no intention of purchasing the game last night.

An Introduction to Comikaze 2011!

Photobucket

Going to Comikaze in Los Angeles was not a very difficult decision for me, despite that it’s over 2 hours away(I live in San Diego). For one, my friend whom I met at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) last summer wanted to go there and I wanted to hang out with her again since we live so far from each other. So we agreed that Comikaze would be cool venue to attend.

So what is Comikaze? It’s a very diverse convention that caters to multiple genres so lot of different fans can come to Comikaze and have a good time. It was created when LA Comic Con got cancelled last August so it’s insane how they pulled this off in such a short period with a long list of awesome guests!  For example, Elvira made her last appearance at a major con in that legendary costume. When I was in the dealers hall and my jaw dropped to the floor because on account of the insanely long line. Also attending was Stan Lee! I have seen a lot of Stan Lee and he was, predictably, very well received.

My Interview with Tom Sullivan

I actually already put this up over at PackRat but I wanted to make sure it was here as well.

At The Walking Dead season 2 party I attended, special effects artist, director, actor and writer Tom Sullivan made an appearance.  I asked him if he could spare a few minutes for an interview and he agreed wholeheartedly.  Check it out below!

Happy Halloween!

Yes, Halloween is here and will soon be gone.  If you remember, I committed at the beginning of the month to 31 days of horror.  While I didn’t quite hit that mark, we did generally have more Halloween-centric stuff that in the past.  Here’s a list of all the horror stuff we covered this month so have a great Halloween and get ready all you writers because NanoWriMo starts tomorrow!

Review: Pigs #1

Initially, I’d seen Pigs down at Packrat but something else stole my attention and I forgot about it.  However, the backstory to this is a bit convoluted.  On twitter a few weeks ago I sent out a tweet asking for recommendations on who I should be following and why.  Kevin Douglas of the most excellent Smart Income Blog responded that I should be following Nate Cosby, co-writer of Pigs. I now felt like a giant douche for not having picked up the comic, having no idea I’d be connecting with its creators shortly thereafter.  So how do I feel now that I’ve read Pigs?
