An Introduction to Comikaze 2011!

Photobucket

Going to Comikaze in Los Angeles was not a very difficult decision for me, despite that it’s over 2 hours away(I live in San Diego). For one, my friend whom I met at SDCC (San Diego Comic Con) last summer wanted to go there and I wanted to hang out with her again since we live so far from each other. So we agreed that Comikaze would be cool venue to attend.

So what is Comikaze? It’s a very diverse convention that caters to multiple genres so lot of different fans can come to Comikaze and have a good time. It was created when LA Comic Con got cancelled last August so it’s insane how they pulled this off in such a short period with a long list of awesome guests!  For example, Elvira made her last appearance at a major con in that legendary costume. When I was in the dealers hall and my jaw dropped to the floor because on account of the insanely long line. Also attending was Stan Lee! I have seen a lot of Stan Lee and he was, predictably, very well received.

Update Time from JB!

JB here! How is everyone doing? I just wanted to take a minute to touch on a few subjects. First off, I would like to (selfishly) self promote my little hobby, drawing. I recently got into drawing back around Christmas. The reason I got into drawing was that I had been watching anime for a short time (since October) and I was interested in attempting to draw it. So, anyways, if you like, please head on over to http://helidead2009.deviantart.com/ and check out the few things I’ve uploaded. Feel free to critique them, as I really need all the help I can get.

On to the next thing- I recently watched a really good anime, called  Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai, or the shortened name, Ano Hana. It’s a short anime series (11 episodes) about 5 teenagers who are trying to move on with their lives after one of their good friends, Menma, died when they were kids. And now, the main character, Jintan, has started to see the ghost of Menma. Its a very good tale of hardship, loss, and friendship, and is well worth the watch. I’d give the anime 4.5 outta 5. The plot is riveting, the characters are really intriguing in their actions and feelings, and they become much more developed throughout the series. The only downsides are that the anime is so short.

Since we are talking about anime, I’d just like to give you a little information about my favorites. While I’ve only watched about 40 animes to date, I feel my list is pretty solid. Anyways, here’s the rundown.

  1. Kanon (2006)
  2. Code Geass
  3. Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni
  4. Angel Beats!
  5. To Aru Majutsu No Index

If anybody reading this is actually interested in anime and would like to discuss anything about it, feel free to comment below or email me at jb.geekspodcast@gmail.com.

Finally, and this is a bit random (but I’m getting kind of desperate trying to find this), I have a song on my IPod that I recorded with a radio streaming app I have. It is from an anime, since the radio app is a streaming anime radio app. But, I have no idea what the song is, who sung it, or even what anime its from. I want to download the song to my ipod, so that I have the actual full song in good quality, and so I can share it with my friends. So, please, head on over to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKQr3mMHxFk&feature, which is where I uploaded the version I had (crappy quality, yes I know) and please get back to me if you recognize the song. That’s all I have at the moment, so we’ll call it a day. Thanks for checking in, and until next time!

Ohayocon 2011 in Pictures

ohayocon201

Below you will find an assortment of pictures from mine and Nicole’s adventure at Ohayocon 2011.  It was an awesome, awesome time and I really was astonished at what a good time I had.  It’s not that I thought it would be awful, but being mainly centered around anime (in which I am not well versed) I wasn’t sure what to expect.  Having now enjoyed everything it has to offer (mostly) I’m more than ready to return next year, but will likely want to stay for the entire 3 days.  Nicole will probably weigh in on this at some point, but between meeting a lot of great artists, meeting the girl behind the voice of Mad Moxxi, going to an enormous nerd rave, and seeing a packed meeting room with geeks anxious to debate the Zelda timeline I wasn’t disappointed.  Check out more pics below!

Vexille: More Proof I Don’t Understand Anime

vexille-dvd-coverSo the wonderful people that brought us the remake of Appleseed recently released Vexille on Blu Ray.  I’m far from an anime aficionado and half the time I can barely pay attention to the plots as I’m easily distracted by the gunplay and pretty colors. I can say that Vexille looks amazing.  To say it is amazing assumes a a degree of familiarity and passion for the medium that I frankly don’t have.  I’ve watched and enjoyed DBZ before along with a handful of commercially successful anime, a la Akira or Ghost in the Shell, but I’ve always felt like a poser.  Like Rob Gordon says in High Fidelity, I feel like one of those people who shave their heads and say that they’ve always been punk.

However insecure I may be with my depth of knowledge surrounding anime, I’m plenty secure in discerning when something is pretty to look at and Vexille certainly fits the bill.  Watching it in glorious 1080P tonight has certainly been enjoyable.  It’s got a cel-shaded look to it, similar to Appleseed, thought a bit more distinguished.  Paul Oakenfold did the score so it also enjoys some pretty punchy audio to complement the visuals, it’s just a shame that it drags so much and has a bit of a ho-hum plot.  Anyways, if you’re looking for something pretty to wow you on your new TV, Vexille should be enough to entertain you for an evening.

What else is there though?  What animated flicks can you all recommend that will satisfy my lust for polished visuals and pretty colors?
