Happy Halloween!

Yes, Halloween is here and will soon be gone.  If you remember, I committed at the beginning of the month to 31 days of horror.  While I didn’t quite hit that mark, we did generally have more Halloween-centric stuff that in the past.  Here’s a list of all the horror stuff we covered this month so have a great Halloween and get ready all you writers because NanoWriMo starts tomorrow!

Horrifying Childhood Movie Moments: Scrooged

Alright, Scrooged, Bill Murray’s (then) modern-day take on A Christmas Carol was supposed to be a comedy.  I mean, it is a comedy and a brilliant one at that.  I can appreciate it now that I’m older, but watching it as a child scared all of the Christmas spirit right out of me.  It wasn’t just one scene, but a few that I remember only as the purest stuff that nightmares were made of.

YouTube Classic Scare: Vader Horrifies Wife

Alright, I know that posting YouTube videos is pretty cheap, but I’m really trying to stick with the 31 days of horror theme here.  In truth, I meant to do another haunted Columbus post, but unfortunately the post I started about the Kingsbury Run Murders actually turned out to be the far more descriptive Cleveland Torso Murderer.  As you can see there’s nothing about Columbus in that so, frustrated I resorted to posting the following video which, admittedly, is still pretty entertaining.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more horror!

Review: Thankskilling

Oh wow.  Just, wow.  I just finished watching Thankskilling.  It is a delightful piece of B-movie schlock that you absolutely must watch.  I should’ve left this to The Monster Popcorn crew, but I just couldn’t help myself.

Now, I’m not going to review this on the standard scale, but rather I am going to use Thankskilling for the establishment of an entirely separate review system.  Why?  Because judging it by traditional standards would be akin to pitting a Big Mac against a Filet Mignon- yes, it’s technically worse but under the right circumstances it’s damn tasty.

Review: American Horror Story

American Horror Story intrigued me when I first heard about it.  There was something curious to me about a television series centering specifically on horror.  I’m sure there have been some before, but generally I’m most familiar with television series that spooky elements (Lost, X-Files, Fringe, True Blood etc.) but not one that pitched itself on consistent horror.  Even Dexter, the show about a serial killer is more of a character-driven drama than an attempt to mortify each episode.

Reminder: The Thing Coming out This Friday!

First off, I’m a huge fan of the original The Thing (wow, that looked weird), and while I haven’t stayed too abreast of what’s going on in the prequel that’s been a long time in the making, I’m intrigued.  Apparently its about the initial research team that discovered the parasitic being prior to its escape and subsequent hell-raising in the original 1982 classic from John Carpenter.

I’m not sure yet if there’s a midnight release but I’d certainly be down for checking out.

Anyone else excited for this or is it just another cash-in on 80s nostalgia?

Dark Comics: Fell

It’s Wednesday so you know what that means- new comics!  However, each Wednesday this month we’ll be highlighting comics that are either horrific, disturbing, emotionally damaging, or all three!  Sleep tight, kids!

With that in mind, I thought today would be a good day to showcase one of my absolute favorites- Fell.

What to Expect From GeeksPodcast in October 2011

We’ve never been secretive about October being our favorite month.  Nicole and I are quick to let the Silent Hill soundtrack drift through the house as we carve up Jack-o-Lanterns and dig through our most terrifying games to start the month off right.

However, it occurred to us that we didn’t really give Halloween the play it deserved in the past.  Sure we did a few posts here and there, but we wanted to take it to a new level in 2011.

Specifically, we’re committing now to give you something horrific, bone-chilling, or otherwise frightening every. single. day.  Posts to rattle your nerves and keep you in the Halloween spirit all month.  Like some kind of demonic Baskin Robins, we’re throwing you 31-derful (har har) consecutive posts centered only around that chill in your spine as the leaves change and the darkness closes in earlier and earlier.  Specifically, you can look for:

  • Reviews specific to horror
  • Haunted locales
  • Demented madmen
  • Scary tales
  • Other serious sh*t

All jokes aside, we love getting into the Halloween spirit and if you’re anything like us we hope you’ll find something to enjoy this month.

Also, make sure to follow us on twitter or like us on FaceBook to keep up to date and not miss anything!

Review: Paranormal Activity

paranormal_activityViewer beware, Paranormal Activity will scare you.  Touted as one of the only films to attribute its success to viewer demand via the internet, it’d be easy to dismiss this indie horror film as having the quality of a direct-to-DVD movie (and in truth, it almost was.)  However, I’m delighted to report that this wasn’t the case and that dismissing it as such would be a terrible mistake, especially for those that are rabid for their Halloween fright fix.  Paranormal Activity absolutely fits the bill, is absolutely terrifying, and will absolutely stick with you on the drive home from the theater and likely into your would-be pleasant dreamland.  But what makes it so effective?  Read on to find out.

Retro rant: Silent Hill Homecoming

The cover art had so much promise...

I know that it is May 28, 2009. I realize this game came out eight months ago and I am just now getting into it. I have come to terms with the fact that I don’t sound like much of a Silent Hill fan for playing it so late. My excuse is that after the first twenty minutes of playing it back in October, I absolutely couldn’t stand it. Please understand I don’t like to complain and I will not rant often, but since I’m in the middle of playing this game I figure this is a healthy (and productive, even) way of releasing my built up frustration.
