5 iOS Changes That Won’t Make me Punch Myself in the Dick

Let me say first that I’m not in the habit of punching myself in the dick.  I’m just illustrating a few minor changes I’d appreciate Apple making that would prevent me from spiraling down that path in frustration, reducing the possibility of my 16 planned Josh Jrs. Changes like…

Apple’s Next iPhone ‘Leaked’

If you head on over to Gizmodo you can take a look at a plethora of other pictures of the purported new iPhone from Apple.  I’m sure many of you are ready to call shenanigans, but the guys over at Gizmodo have carefully examined, tinkered with, and agreed that this iPhone is the real deal.  It came from an anonymous source who found it in a bar, which, isn’t inspiring really, but what is inspiring is that after dissecting the device and poking around its innards, all of the hardware was meticulously crafted and multiple components had Apple’s name on them. Further lending validity to this device being the new iPhone is the fact that when connected to iTunes it is recognized as an iPhone.

There’s video of the device itself, but nothing of it operating as Apple apparently nuked the device remotely.  From what the guys over at Gizmodo could discern, the following features will be present in the next iPhone if this alleged prototype is any indication:

  • Better camera with flash
  • Front-facing camera
  • No more tapered edges, opting for a flush, flat look and feel
  • Slightly heavier due to larger battery
  • Back casing remains plastic, likely in a bid to increase reception for the internal antenna
  • Two volume buttons instead of a continuous rocker
  • Microphone located at the top of the device as well as the bottom, possibly in a bid to increase call clarity
  • Aluminum edging with exposed seams (however, it’s possible this will be changed once the final model makes its debut)
  • Screen appears slightly smaller, though much higher resolution as was evidenced by the ‘Connect to iTunes’ screen

Now, I’m not going to say that this isn’t a legitimate leak, but what I will say is I think this may be a purposeful, coordinated marketing effort by Apple to jump-start the hype machine prior to its announcement at the WWDC this summer.

What do you think of the new device?  Was it a leak, or a carefully orchestrated marketing effort?

7 iPhone OS 4.0 Features Revealed

A couple of days ago I made some predictions surrounding what Apple would be announcing for its latest version of the iPhone OS 4.0.  Not to toot my own horn, but I was right on more than a few of them (including my prediction that Jobs would wear a turtleneck were he in attendance).  So let’s get right to it and take a look at the 7 announcements regarding the latest iPhone OS and how they’ll affect us as iPhone die-hards.

iPhone OS 4.0 Event Set for April 8th

Hot on the heels of the iPad release, Apple has revealed that they’ll be making an announcement this week regarding iPhone OS 4.0.  While not much more information has come forth beyond that, I’m going to go ahead and make a handful of predictions regarding the event:

  • A release date will be announced (hopefully)
  • Support for at least some form of multi-tasking will be announced
  • A more customizable and useful unlock screen will be added
  • A slicker interface with better app management will be made available (Because Lord knows we need it)
  • Sharing of data between apps will be possible (albeit with limitations)
  • Better Exchange support will be made available
  • If Jobs is present, he’ll be wearing jeans and a turtleneck

Some of these are obviously a given, but I’m totally pumped to see what type of upgrades will be ready for my iPhone hopefully sometime this summer.  What features are you anticipating?

iPhone Safari Alternative : VanillaSurf

I just wanted to share this as I ran across it yesterday.  I never gave much thought to an alternative browser on the iPhone.  Safari’s kind of right there and it just never occurred to me how unhappy I was with it.  But then a few things came to mind.  Things like:

  • There’s no tabbed browsing
  • When switching between open windows the entire page will annoyingly refresh, even if you don’t want it to
  • There’s no way to download files and store them on the iPhone

Incredibly, it turns out there’s been a an App Store approved browser, Vanilla Surf (iTunes link) that boasts all of these features and more such as:

  • Full-screen browsing
  • De-activate loading of pictures
  • Ad-blocker

I’ve only spent a  little bit of time with it so far, but it seems like a winner.  I will say I did have it crash on me once, but that may be due to my iPhone being jailbroken and eating up more memory than it ought to rather than a problem with the app.  My understanding is that all 3rd party browsers in the App Store are required to be built upon the Safari framework, but with a boatload of features that probably should have been in Safari, it’s easy to recommend Vanilla Surf so far.  I mean, we no longer have to be forced to use an operating system’s browser on a PC, so why should we tolerate it on a mobile platform?  So enjoy your tab-switching, non-forced-refreshy goodness!

Canabalt : A Grand Statement of Design

While everyone’s been all hyped up about Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 lately, in the midst of the chaos I found another truly remarkable game that deserves your attention.  Canabalt, a 2D escapist platformer may be well known to many of you, but what you may not know is that it made its way to the appstore in the form an incredibly addictive and well-ported iPhone game.  In the legendary words of Ron Burgundy, apparently you just run!  Alright, to be fair there’s a lot of jumping in there too, but that about covers all the bases.  Amazingly, it was created by only three guys over at Semi Secret Software and man did they nail what it takes to make a great game.  I’ve always said that solid gameplay will immortalize a title more than aesthetics alone ever could, and Canabalt is certainly no exception.  Its gameplay is simple, addictive, and most of all fun. You can purchase it from the app store here for only $.099.

Hands On With Pastebot for iPhone

Copy.  Paste.  How many times would you say you do that in any given day?  If you work at all with a computer (and really, who doesn’t?), then you likely perform those actions constantly.  It’s an old, old computing concept that many of us likely take for granted that really hasn’t changed much since its inception.  However, while I certainly love Apple products, they were a little late to the copy and paste party until iPhone OS 3.0 came out.  But what would happen if your iPhone’s copy and paste functionality were taken a step further, allowing you the functionality of a clipboard manager to save commonly used text and images?  More still, what if you could organize those clippings into a folder structure for quick access on your phone and extend that functionality further by syncing your clippings with your Mac?  Well, as it turns out thanks to the fine people over at Tapbots now you can!

Balloons for iPhone is Awesome

Balloons! If you’ve never tossed a bottle with a note in it into the ocean or, more in line with this app, sent a balloon into the sky with a note attached to it, you have to check out the Balloons app.  You can read more about it over at the official site, but the functionality is pretty straight forward.  Choose a colorful balloon from the app’s main screen, snap a picture with your iPhone and add some text if you’d like.  After you’re done, launch your balloon and track it to watch where it ends up.  As people catch your balloon, they can add their own text and pictures which you can track from the ‘Baloon Tracker’ screen.  I’ve launched a few myself and have had them caught all over the place, including one person from England!  It’s only $2.99 on the app store and is definitely a fun little app to play around with.
