For those of you being raised by a pack of wolves or who think that Angry Birds is a mainstream game, it may come as a shock that a major event in gaming occurred last night. Along with my good friend and founder of GeeksPodcast, Grand Master Joshua Irish, I attended the midnight release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I will state up front that my experience with the Call of Duty franchise is limited. I have played a handful of games of Zombies, finished the Modern Warfare 2 campaign in 4 hours, and now have played Modern Warfare 3 for about and hour. Needless to say, I’m not what you would call a fanatic, and I had no intention of purchasing the game last night.

Arkham City Midnight Launch
So I went with my friend Kyle to pick up Arkham City at midnight last night. I’ve been positively rabid to step back into the boots of the Caped Crusader lately, especially having already enjoyed most of his New 52 appearances.
It was a pretty good midnight launch with pizza available, people dressed up as the Dark Knight, and some swag handed out for best costume. There was some light competition involving challenge mode from the original Arkham Asylum. I participated but alas, my training overwhelmed my ability to achieve a high score. Unfortunately I kept knocking criminals out almost immediately instead of leaving them conscious to get beat mercilessly for higher combo scores.
Nicole’s Splicer Costume
Below is a video Nicole made of her totally rad Splicer costume that I think turned out pretty well! We’ll post some pics of the finished product sometime tomorrow. Enjoy!
3 Midnight Launches within 9 days?!
…yep. You’d think this one would be completely for me, but deep down I think Josh may even be more excited than I am. The second movie of the Twilight series, New Moon, debuts today and nine of us are going to be waiting in line eagerly around 10PM at Polaris’ Rave Theater. If I’m lucky I’ll convince Josh to let me bring the video cam and we’ll take some video of all the teenagers (and then us) anticipating some hot vampire action. Stay tuned, we’ll be doing reviews for this cinematic masterpiece within a couple of days!
Another Night, Another Midnight Launch
Well, 3 midnight launches more specifically. As you can see I’ve braved yet another midnight hour in my lust for geekish media. I confess though, that copy of Assassin’s Creed II is Jon’s, not mine, as he was nice enough to join me tonight. I will pick it up, but not until I’m done beating Modern Warfare 2. Come to to think of it, that’s like the third sequel to come along recently. I already know that MW2 is living up to its predecessor, but I haven’t spent enough time with these other two sequels to say either way. I’m sure I’ll review at least one of them in the coming week or two, but for now I’m going to kick back, relax, drink another, terrible Red Bull and play until I can’t keep my eyes are open, or the sun reminds me of my foolishness. Stay tuned!
Modern Warfare 2 Launches Tonight!
Yes, the time we’ve all (or at least I’ve) been desperately waiting for has finally arrived. Tonight I’ll be headed to my local Gamestop to pick up the latest from Infinity Ward and bask in the glory of terrorist headshots and WoW-esque deathmatches. It launches at midnight tonight and while Nicole can’t make it with me, I’ll be there, camera in hand to interview some of the crazies that are going out. It’ll probably take me a few days to edit the video together but I’ll be sure to get it up there even if it is horrifically bad just so you can see how many people showed up. At my Gamestop they took over 450 pre-orders, so it’s likely there will be a lot showing up. I’ve heard at the campus location near OSU that they had over 1200 pre-orders and it’s going to be so crazy that Skyline Chili will be there handing out free, well, chili. So stay tuned and as soon as I have the time I’ll re-cap the launch!
The Halo 3: ODST Midnight Launch
Yup, that happened. Anyways, now that I’ve already been to the midnight launch I figured it’d be time to talk about it a little bit. Mind you, this isn’t a review of the game as that’ll come later, but rather just me rambling on about the hype surrounding the launch.
I showed up at Gamestop around 9:30, somewhat dismayed to be the only one there. Call me crazy, but there’s a part of me that just loves being around other gamers as passionate about a launch as I am. Not a few minutes later though, another guy showed up named Ryan and we talked about the return of the Halo pistol and some of the achievements that had been leaked.
Slowly but surely, more and more started showing up and forming an awkward line behind Ryan and I. At 10:00 the
manager saw fit to open the store back up to ring people out in advance. At this point Ryan and I went inside and because my nickname is Dr. McClassy, I let him go ahead of me to check out. I switched my reserve last minute from the standard edition to the collector’s figuring that Nicole and I only have two 360 controllers anyways and it is a pretty classy looking controller; better than the McFarlane ones anyways.
At this point, the waiting game began. Geeks and fanboys started crawling out of the woodwork everywhere shortly after 10 while I walked around aimlessly for a few minutes, debating on whether or not to interact with people or read up on my Drizzt book I’d carted along with me. After realizing that reading is for stupid people (not you guys though) I started talking with the manager about our own histories of gaming only to find that he too had come from a very geekish family with an old coax network his dad had set up while he was growing up.
This was fun for a while, until the reality of multiple sodas, a red bull, and my inexplicable belief that a large bottle of water might offset the negative health value of my previous drinks began their assault on my bladder. Most of you know that GameStop doesn’t readily have bathrooms available so I had to go hauling ass across a 4-lane street to a McDonalds to relieve myself.
After experiencing the nirvana of sweet, uh, urin-y release I grabbed some nuggets and headed back across the street. At this point the crowd had nearly doubled with a line out the door and around the block of some 60 or 70 people I’d estimate. I regained my position in line at the front and waited patiently, this time opting not to drink my weight in sugar water.
Finally, the moment came and it was magical. Ok, it wasn’t magical but I was certainly happy to get my grubby mitts on the object of my desire and drive home listening to the Halo overture. Sadly, by the time I got home and Nicole got off work at her other job we were too tired to pop it in. BUT- that won’t stop me from playing through it like a mad man tomorrow when I get off.
I’ve been to larger, more fantasticaly midnight launches, but this one was fun nonetheless, if only to experience the joys of bladder limitation. Stay tuned for the full review of Halo 3: ODST!
