Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World The Game The Review

If you’re at all familiar with the source material, it’s more than apparent that Scott Pilgrim was begging to be made into a game. In fact, it was so steeped in video game culture that Ubisoft did just that, creating a retro-inspired side scrolling brawler. While it’s certainly not the only developer to play on our nostalgia for a simpler time in gaming, it is the most recent. So how does Scott Pilgrim perform?

Discless Netflix for PS3 Arrives

If you haven’t heard, you can now use Netflix on the PS3 without having to insert the Netflix disc.  The new Netflix is now available as a downloadable app.  I’m going to play with it some more, but so far the interface overhaul looks pretty nifty.  The old version for PS3 seemed more than a bit clunky compared to its 360 counterpart, but this new version might have me firing up the PS3 a bit more often for my streaming media needs.

What do you think of the new Netflix?

Heavy Rain Demo Impressions

Today I downloaded the Heavy Rain demo for PS3 and figured I’d finally take a peak at Quantic Dream’s next outing.  the download took a bit and the install took around 20 minutes or so, but after the wait I was immediately plunged into a portion of what will be a very, very immersive environment. Heavy Rain is the story of a fictional serial murderer, the Origami Killer.  4 strangers come together in this dark mystery, their stories intermingling with one another as you decide their fate through a myriad of forks in the plot.  Playing less like a conventional game and more like a choose your own adventure book, I was familiar with this type of game after much enjoying QD’s previous outing, Indigo Prophecy.

Geekend Updates – Feburary 5th, 2010

Nicole and I have run into a fundamental problem each week with our posting.  Lately we’ve worked toward more original posts and less ‘newsy’ posts because we realized there is way too much happening in geek culture each week to aptly catalog with daily posts.  So, starting today we’ll begin posting your geekend updates where you can at-a-glance see all the cool stuff we’ve come across each week.  Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Heavy Rain’s many looks

To the left of this text is Japan’s cover for the heavily anticipated Heavy Rain, due out February 23 for those of us stateside. I have no idea what an unidentifiable male face is supposed to signify, but I’m sure once I play it I will be green with envy over Japan’s cover art. The United States’ is probably the lamest so far: in my opinion the characters kind of take away from the artistic simplicity it could have been, like on the European cover (featuring a bloody origami creature). Which cover do you prefer?

Welcome to the Club, Nintendo

The 360 gained popularity and staying power when they introduced Netflix to their system in late 2008. Since then, over a million users have added the Netflix application to their system, and for $8.99 USD a month that is certainly one heck of a deal. One year later the PlayStation 3 joined our century and the Netflix Instant Streaming Disc was arriving on the doorsteps of PS3 users as well.

Now Nintendo is gearing up to add Netflix to their consoles as well. Streaming will be introduced to the Wii this spring sometime, although no approximate dates have been added yet. For geeks like Joshua and I, this essentially means we can have Netflix on all five of our systems. Now we just need to buy a fifth TV…

Orb Now Available for Mac

OrbOrb, the free media streaming software has recently released a Mac client for streaming all of your music, movie, and picture goodness over the internet for free.  As an added bonus, it also has UPnP support so you can locally stream to devices such as the Xbox 360 and Ps3.  Ever since I made the switch decided to give Mac a shot, this has been one area that I haven’t tackled yet.  On Windows it was relatively easy to stream my media to these devices, but on the Mac I hadn’t had the time or motivation to sort that all out.  I haven’t tried it yet, but later tonight I’ll certainly give it a shot and maybe upload a video of my findings.  Head on over to the official site to check it out for yourself.

Stayin Busy

DexterNicole and I mean to podcast tomorrow (seriously this time) on account of having way more material to talk about.  From Zombieland to Scribblenauts and the debut of the fourth season of Dexter, we’ve been keeping up on geekish things as much as we can as fall starts to kick off.

On a somewhat related note, we traded in some games yesterday at every gamer’s favorite, veritable pawn shop and are now in the process of deciding which games to purchase over the next couple of months.  Chief among them (not speaking for Nicole at all necessarily) are DJ Hero, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Brutal Legend, and Uncharted 2. Of course, before I’ll even think about all those I must finish Arkham Asylum and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 or I just won’t respect myself in the morning.

What about you all?  What games would you like to see us ramble on about?

Super Street Figher 4 Announced!

Ouch.Though you can’t see it, I’m cockily laughing at every single one of you who bought Street Fighter 4 already.  Not in an overly mean way, just matter-of-factly because yours truly had the foresight to envision a move like this from Capcom and wisely held onto his $60 at launch.  So ha!  Actually, in truth I was busy playing a lot of other games at the time and as much as I like Street Fighter, I rarely purchase fighting games as most of my friends don’t dig it enough to get excited.  Just the same, I might give it a shot this time around.  Are any of you planning to pick this up despite already owning Street Fighter 4?
