Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Sony for PSN Outage

Because the 360 is wholly our platform of choice, I guess it didn’t occur to me to do a post about PSN being down for over a week now.  However, now it’s getting ridiculous.  What began as an outage turned into an intrusion and then to a security analysis and now we’re learning that the personal information of millions of PSN users has probably been compromised.  Which, in a turn of events that should be surprising to absolutely no one a class action lawsuit has been filed on account of countless angry gamers for Sony’s herping to the point of derp.

I suppose I haven’t paid a horrible amount of attention to this development because that’s how little I use my PS3 and even when I do I could care less about PSN.  However, that doesn’t mean it’s not important and while at first I kind of laughed at Sony and shrugged it off for the fumble, with each passing day the shit gets proverbially more real.  I actually feel bad for them as one estimate believes this blunder will cost Sony a cool $24 billion dollars.  That’s billion.  With a ‘B’.  Ouch.

Crappy as the situation is I can feel only so much remorse for a company that releases a new firmware update with the same kind of regularity as my cockatiel’s bowel movements only to have such a massive security problem manifest itself this way.  Making matters worse is that their only real response has been to tell us that there isn’t a real response but they’ll keep us posted.  I guess you do what you can, but the more this escalates the uglier it gets.

R.I.P. PSPgo

Kotaku reported today that it looks like the PSPgo is going the way of the N-Gage and has been officially declared dead.  Sony is discontinuing it in favor of focusing on the forthcoming NGP.

Personally I never had any interest in the PSPgo.  That’s not to say I didn’t love a lot of the games for the PSP when I had one because there were some real gems, but sexy as this unit was I think it was too underpowered and overambitious for its time.  While digital distribution is the inevitable end-game for video game purchasing, we’re not quite there yet and the high price point for the PSPgo and its games made it a hard purchase to justify for many gamers.

Thankfully, the original PSP is still in production but I seriously doubt too many tears will be shed for its stylish big brother.

Microsoft’s Turn

Xbox 360 EliteIn response to Sony’s $299.99 PS3 Slim, Microsoft has confirmed that they are indeed phasing out the Xbox 360 Pro and are leaving the public with two options (giggle): the $199.99 Arcade system or the $299.99 Elite system. The big change here is that the Elite is $100 less than it used to be, but still comes with the 120GB hard drive. In fact, the only difference between the $399.99 Elite and the $299.99 is that the Elite will now come with standard component cables, no HDMI cables. No worries to the high-def gamers like Joshua and me though: you can get most universal HDMI cables for around $40, and used at Gamestop they’re only $19.99. Now if Microsoft would only include the wireless adapter, these things would fly off the shelves even more than they already do.

E3 Coverage Starts Today, Kids!

E3This is just a friendly reminder that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will be delivering their press conferences today and that we should all stop what we’re doing to watch the big three duke it out through pie graphs, exclusive titles, and good old fashioned mud-slinging.  Microsoft’s up to bat first about 3 hours from now, but you can check out the live coverage courtesy of G4 with all of their fancy-pants HD cameras and incredible budget for bandwidth.
